So, what does that make you? The biggest failings of political parties, in both Canada and the US, (IMNSHO,) is that as all of us boomers got older, we tended to become fiscally conservative, while a lot of us retained our liberal social values. The right was/is fiscally conservative, socially conservative. The left was spendthrift, but socially liberal. I noticed a number of folks who came out in those polls like me. I don't want to bankrupt the country, but I believe in socialized medicine, I don't give a fig who marries who - Pierre Trudeau's line that the nation has no business in the bedrooms of the nation is my truth. Or as the Wickens say, "As ye hurt none, do as ye will." So, is there going to be a party that finally understands that? In Canada, the liberals come closest - actually, under Chretien and Martin, they realized that. Is Obama going to be that for the States - or is he going to spend into bankruptcy? 500 lines by tomorrow morning, please...

Judging from our scores on the political quiz thread, you and I are fairly similar in outlook.
There's not much reason for optimism on the fiscal restraint side of things in the US.
The Republicans used to talk a good game, but once they got in, they totally lost it.
The most important thing about that is "WHY"? Now, you can say they were just a bunch of venal, craven asswipes who finally showed their true colors. But that would be too convenient. I think the reality is that they are politicians, and politicians go where the wind blows, and right now, the US still thinks it can get something for nothing.
And why shouldn't we? We've been running insane deficits for generations. How has it ever hurt us? Who today can point to a moment's discomfort associated with federal deficits.
We're like the guy falling off the 20 story building. As he goes past the third floor on his way down, he is heard to say "so far, so good".

Fiscally conservative and socially liberal...
That's like wearing florida retiree-chic from the waist down, and something from frisco/castro from there up.

But there's a lot of us in that boat, isn't there? Even Sek scored that way, and she's about as far out on the left as any of us here. I see a lot of the same opinion on boards and from friends and associates.
