Chili, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression. I think I've raised my kids with an appreciation of public service (one son is an Eagle scout, my daughter wants to be a cop). I'll support any of their decisions. But they have to be their desicions.

Wrong impression? Not at all, David. I agree that it should be up to the individual serving the time, making the sacrifice, and/or risking their life in the process. I think the all volunteer military and the end of the draft were two of the best things to come along in the early 70s. Unfortunately it was a bit late for some of my friends and a long list of others.
There remains a short list of things that I think my generation (I'm including myself) got wrong but I'm glad that we had the courage to stand up, right or wrong, for what we thought was right. One thing I know we got right for sure was the right for the eighteen year olds to vote. Many of us felt that if we were old enough to be sent off to fight and die for our country, the very least our country could give us was the right to vote for (or against) those who sat on their fat asses, voted themselves pay raises, and sent us into the line of fire. Looking back over the last three decades, I have serious doubt that more than 10% of 18 to 20 year olds know where that right came from. In addition to that very few of them execised their right to vote.... with exception of the last presidential election.
