Look on the bright side, Paul. Think of all those people you won't have to court marshal for saying "that son of a bitch Colonel " because you didn't hear them.

If I'd known there was going to be a test, I would have paid closer attention.
A while ago I read about new hearing aids that are tailored to the individual. They boost only the needed frequencies, based on an individual's hearing test.
I haven't heard anything about this, but I would think another good feature would be noise canceling to silence persistent ringing. It might not be any good for daytime social situations, but it'd be nice to have a switch to flip that would effectively give you a quiet night's sleep.

Dang , y'all. Alan c , you mAde me laugh. It's kind of gross, but being an extremely heavy wax producer has preserved my hearing almost intact. Reading this makes me grateful.

My tinnitus has increased since the bike wreck. At first, it made me want to hammer a screwdriver in my ear, but I have become accustomed to it somewhat. The hearing aid should arrive in the next few weeks.

I have my hearing tested tomorrow morning. Not to see if I have loss but to see how bad. My hearing has been subpar for years. We had a TV once that my wife insisted we needed to get fixed because of some (purported) high-pitched noise it made.
My AARP Medicare Part B covers some hearing aids for a reasonable co-pay. I think I'll go with the small over the ear ones.
I too am lost in any noisy situation, with no idea what is being said, or worse, the wrong idea, like a story my friend, Dan, told me recently. He helps out part-time at a landscaping company and his boss asked him if he knew the owner of a nice home with a yard that could use some work. Dan said he had known her for years and had been her student in a class at the university and that it would be great if they could mow her lawn. His boss said, "She hasn't asked" and Dan responded "You should have seen it 40 years ago. His boss almost fell down laughing and had to explain to Dan that he had said "She hasn't asked," not "She has an ass."

I sometimes volunteer as a subject in hearing projects at the University of Iowa's Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center. We were in Colorado last weekend for a wedding and when we returned home last night there was a letter from them asking me to take part in another study. This one will last for six to eight months and they will issue several types of hearing aids for me to wear and evaluate. They will give me a smart phone with known recording and audio properties and a small wearable voice recorder. I'm to use a special app to record my experiences with each device. They want to study the performance of everything from very high-tech programmable aids to cheap amplifier aids to try to establish the differences as observed by people who actually wear aids instead of the engineer's predicted or expected performance. Since they have often measured my precise hearing loss, they can use my data to compare to other subjects and get a better understanding of what these aids actually do for their wearers. My first appointment with them isn't until August 6 and my part of the test will probably run into next year but I'll be happy to report my own impressions of each type of aid back here if people would like.

Wow. I'm amazed by what I'm reading here.
I only have trouble hearing in noisy restaurants. At least, that's the only difficulty I'm conscious of, and I've had that one for a long time. No ringing. But I've thought that my singing and guitar playing have gotten better over the last decade, and at times I've wondered if that impression was due to just not being able to hear it as well.
