An older book, fiction but based on true events, that is a favorite of mine is The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. If you have any Civil War interest, you might like that one. I love that one. It's a great book. Like Dradtke said, I appreciate this list and like him, this time I'm actually writing them down. All sound good. Too bad I have read all of Cormac McCarthy's stuff. Especially Blood Meridian. If I hadn't they'd be good suggestions.

I love these threads. I've borrowed a Kindle copy of Those Who Save Us from our library and ordered a paperback of The Summer Book. Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series was a recommendation from my son. A very engaging mix of adventure, mystery, and wonderful characters. If you read the first, The Lies of Locke Lamora, you will read the second, then the third, then join the list of those impatiently waiting for the 4th installment. This release has been pushed back more than once and is now scheduled for next summer. www.amazon.com/Lies-Locke-Lamora-Gentleman-Bastards/dp/055358894X

Been writing down some of your suggestions.
May I bring up a book I haven't noticed mentioned..?
First: If you're dead set on or have made a serious intention to soon visit Mexico....don't read this book. In fact, don't even read anymore of this post...
OK. You've been warned.
"The Cartel" by Don Winslow.
just published June of this year. Thriller Diller: check. Characters you amazed that you're could care about: check. A nice long epic: check. And extraordinary breadth of canvas: check. Straight out of the news: double check!!
This book is all you have to read to understand the complexity of the Mexican Drug Wars. (And ..our...whisper whisper culpability of drug appetite..meaning the US....you know... the enabling....shhhh)
And straight out of the news. No sooner was this book published, than "El Chappo" escapes from prison in Mexico, the plot almost straight of the book... ad the resemblances go on and on...
This book sprang to mind this pm as I read the news item regarding the two Canadians who presumably perished on their way to Guadalahara. Burnt to a crisp.
Abd what is nice about it. And what makes it such a long read... is that it spans all of the social layers and structures of economic class, from an upscale party of the government class down to the dirt poor kid coming out of the stultifying nihilism of a poor barrio.
But like I said, don't read this book if you are thinking of going to Mexico. I mean, yeah I'm sure you could probably get in and get out alive...but it's that word "probably" that will keep you up at night. And if you read this book you're gonna do a lot of staying up at night as it is.
just some thoughts...

I'm reading another crappy book. I don't know if my reading tastes are evolving or if I've just been unlucky lately, although I suspect it's probably the latter. My current crappy book is Split Second by Douglas Richards. The first book I read of his was Wired, about a microbiologist who figured out how to chemically rewire her brain to better enhance her abilities. It was good. She figured out how to double our lifespan but couldn't put her plan into effect because of other factors that it would cause, like over population. The enhanced state couldn't be achieved for long and caused interesting side effects. For one, enhanced people tended to be purely logical and amoral. (I guess that's two.) And because their minds were racing so fast, they didn't have much patience for conversations with others because of the painfully long pauses in between each and every word while someone spoke at normal speeds. I liked it so much I got the sequel, Amped, which promised to solve the overcrowding issue. But the book was bad. I gave the first book five stars and the second only two. And I promised myself I wouldn't buy any more of Richards' books.
But then an ad came up for Split Second. It had a lot of good reviews and it was a free loaner to Amazon Prime members, so I got it. It's about a physicist who figures out how to travel 45 microseconds into the past. I'm about a third of the way into the book and I still don't know why someone would want to go 45 microseconds into the past, but sooner or later it should be explained. I'll finish it unless it gets even worse, which would be hard to do. Then I'll give Amazon their stupid book back.

Done.
The book is about an alien race that communicates telepathically. It's on its way...whoa! It's there. Boy, that was quick.
