On this day in 1775, the Marines were born. Took 'em long enough. The Army had already been around for 150 days!
Semper Fi, my friends.

In a fit of disgust with the world, I almost enlisted in the Marines right when I got out of high school. I'm pretty sure my recruiter thought I was in the bag after we'd gone through several meetings, etc. Not sure why I changed my mind. Just couldn't seal the deal.
I've often wondered how things would have gone if that decision had gone the other way. I don't really regret my decision. More a matter of curiosity.
Anyway, with apologies to our resident Colonel, I remember my first meeting with the recruiter like it was yesterday. He asked me "why the Marines?", and I answered "because of the various branches, I've always thought of them as the best".
Happy birthday!

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for I am a Marine and the meanest Mother Fucker in the valley.

*SALUTE* Thank you, Colonel! At the age of 19 I was tired of being told what to do... so I joined the United States Marine Corps.
With all due respect to the other branches, you'll notice that it's Marines guarding the White House!

They handle those 9.5 -pound M1s like they were matchsticks, don't they?
One of the pleasures of living in DC is the ability to see these guys, along with a Marine Band concert, every Friday evening throughout the summer.

They handle those 9.5 -pound M1s like they were matchsticks, don't they? [...] They're young and they're in the best condition of their lives. Of course they do.
