I think he should have been charged with willful damage of the natural landscape. And why didn't he haul the bike back up with him when he crawled to the road. Inconsiderate.

Lucky guy.
He's full of crap, though. The steering did not "lock up". What happened is he came in too hot, panicked, looked at the cliff instead of looking at where he wanted to go, target fixated, and down he went.

Oh yeah. I had a few issues over the years going to fast into corners. I certainly never had it "lock up". Of course, these new fangled bikes could have power steering, ya know.

The luck of youth. Four years and five months ago I remember seeing a pot hole and a bump. What went through my mind was, " This has a bad outcome". That's the last time I was normal. Now I am more abnormal than that.

Oh yeah. I had a few issues over the years going to fast into corners. I certainly never had it "lock up". Of course, these new fangled bikes could have power steering, ya know. I remember reading an article years ago about Kevin Schwantz. He talked about staying on the throttle heading into a corner "until you see God", then slamming on the brakes. For some reason, that always stuck with me. (Those 2-strokes they rode back then were just insane. They say the throttle was pretty much an on-off switch. Not a lot of subtle control.) Anyway, I've always thought that crashing in a corner was a pretty simple proposition: If you've come in too hot to save it, one of two things is going to happen. You can low-side, or you can chicken out and run off the road. All you can do is put your eyes on the vanishing point and lean it over. The rest is out of your hands. Most of the crash videos that I see of this type involve chickening out, and looking at them, they had all kinds of lean angle left to use, but didn't have the nerve to use it. Of course, all things being equal, you're better off not pretending to be Kevin Schwantz or Valentino Rossi and just take it easy going in.

That is a good reminder for me that I should not have a street bike. I love going fast through corners, and I am not likely to bounce as well as that young guy did.

I talked to a guy years ago who bought a Kawasaki 1300 when it came out. He thought it was going to be a performance bike, but it was really a touring bike with a monster engine. He went into a corner hard in the Sea to Sky Highway here, so low he drove the engine case into the pavement, so hard that he high sided. He flew into a grass covered embankment, realizing that several hundred pounds of motorcycle was following behind him; he hit the embankment, the bike hit right beside him. I gather he was mostly unhurt. And very, very lucky.

LOWER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A driver was forced to gun his engine and jump a drawbridge that began rising as he crossed it with his family.
Terence Naphys, of West Deptford Township, had paid the toll to cross the Middle Thorofare Bridge with three family members in his vehicle on Aug. 1. The bridge links Cape May with the Wildwoods near the Jersey shore.
As he was crossing the steel grate, it began to rise 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 meters) because a vessel was trying to cross, police said.
"My wife said, 'I think the bridge is opening,'" Terence Naphys told KYW-TV in Philadelphia.
"He accelerated, and of course then we landed with a big impact on the concrete on the side," said Jackie Naphys.
Police said the landing caused minor damage to his vehicle. No one was hurt.
Authorities said the operator of the bridge was to blame for the scare.
"An employee for the Cape May County Bridge Commission stated that a large vessel was approaching the bridge and they had no contact with that vessel due to their radio being down," police said in their report.
The bridge tender told police he activated the bridge's lights and gates in anticipation that all vehicles would be clear. However, he wasn't sure because of sun glare.
Terence Naphys said he would never cross the bridge again.
