My brother in law is at Sloan Kettering for chemo for a couple of weeks. He had leukemia and the chemo has now provoked a new separate cancer. The chemo for this one is not as intense as the last round at least for the first couple of weeks. He is very interested in hitting a few of the high end guitar stores before he slums Sam Ash and picks up one of the laminate Martins. Suggestions for high end stores that are still extant? Is Matty Umanov's still in biz? Other suggestions? He has 1-2 weeks with free afternoons before the chemo will wipe him out. Any and all help appreciated, especially if they can be attached to addresses and directions from Sloan Kettering.

I have never been to NYC but I would love to visit Carmine Street Guitars and TR Crandall. Howard should have some suggestions.

Umanov closed up shop a couple years ago, though I hear that he still takes repair/restoration jobs (he owned his building). His former restoration guy, Tom Crandall, now has a store full of goodies: TR Crandall Guitars, 156 Ludlow St, 5th floor (trcrandall.com/). The shop is full of all manner of goodies, and Tom has become Fixer to the Famous. We've known him for decades (he was one of Cezarija's star pupils before he went walkabout in the direction of commerce), and I own his first guitar, an archtop he built in his apartment kitchen with hand tools. I had it at IJam a few years back-- Howard has had Tom work on one of his instruments--

All the music places was near the theaters - Broadway I remember that in the 60s maybe it’s different now. The Sloan-Kettering near another borough. Howard has the particulars and the another Howard Emerson also.

I still kick myself. When I was in NYC for Howard's Big Apple Jam, way back when, I thought about hopping the Ferry and stopping by Mandolin Bros.
**SIGH**
Those days are gone.
( I mean I've been to Gruhn, Cotten, and Carter in Nashville. Gryphon in Pal Alto, and most great guitar shops in IL, WI, MI, IN, & some in Iowa. Cosmic treated me in Portland. I used to make a point, whenever I was in a city, to check out a quality store or two. But I blew it with Mandolin Bros.)
