Wow,that’s sad. I exchanged a bunch of messages with him over FB, about writing. I wonder what happened, the obit doesn’t mention it. He’ll be missed, for sure. He was a voice of reason, always.

What a loss but what a life. He lived in search of The Next Truth, whether it be in politics or public policy or how to revitalize a house or a neighborhood.
And he told great stories. In a world coarsened and abbreviated by people in too much of a hurry, he was a gem.

I saw this on FB, and completely misunderstood. I thought Don had lost his father. Damn damn damn. He will be be missed.

He said “a couple projects.” I’m wondering if there were health issues he just didn’t want to disclose.

Like others here this is a shock to me. I too was waiting for his next book and had read the post Todd mentioned about him taking time off to work on it. A bright, thoughtful man. I will miss him. What a wonderful, full life he had though. RIP Don.

This truly feels like a punch to the gut.
Rest in Peace Chesapeake. A fine gentleman and true Renaissance Man.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

What a HUGE loss for this gang. He was truly one of our brightest lights.

Damn. I was hoping to get out to DC sometime, and looking forward to the next book. I'll miss him.

I never met Don, but from what I experienced of him here on the forum, I liked him thoroughly. I also had hoped to meet him someday and even spend a couple of nights in his B&B—we were planning to make a weekend trip to DC just this autumn with our 13-year-old, who is completely enrapt by the Colonial Era and the Revolutionary War. Of course, like many other people's plans, those were dashed by the pandemic.
This is very sad news. Why is it always the good ones who are taken from us first?

He was so often a voice of calm and reason when we needed it. My prayers are with his family.
We have been losing too many lately!

That's what happens when we all get old.

True. Shannon is one of our young pups here and he's a grandpa!

At first glance it seems that all of the ones we have been losing are the good ones. But a half second's glance and we realize that all of us here are the good ones. It's sad to lose anyone here, and we've seen too much of it lately.

Just too much loss and sadness this year.
I bought his book, The Constable’s Tale, when he was first promoting it. I couldn’t get into it (no doubt the limitations of the reader rather than the author). However, I suspect it would please him to know even one reader intends to give the book another go. Thanks for your art. Rest In Peace.
