For the fun of it, I searched 25 BEST BACHELOR’S DEGREES IN GENDER AND WOMEN’S STUDIES and thought of all the money and time that will be spent to achieve this filling the minds of the students thinking that they have such a bright future ahead. Then I thought of the ever increasing youth going to trade school, and thought the same thing.
I never told my kids what they should study, I only told them choose what you would want to do for the majority of your life. I also told them choose something and acquire the skills that would allow you to become an independent business person. I was fortunate that 85% of my career I was an independent contractor, and while being told that I should get with a company and stick it out for a good retirement, I just followed and studied all the up and coming technology, so that I could be an asset to any company. Fortunately I was in demand for my entire career.
Having been an instructor in the college system for 7 years in Community colleges and 13 in a university setting, I am witnessing the decline of student going heavily in debt and not being able to get employed, because they followed a program of study that was recommended to them from family, counselors etc, while not really achieving anything that they could spend the rest of their life doing, if getting employed in their chosen field at all.
If anyone asks me today about education. I just say to ask their child what they want to do and what is the likelyhood of them becoming employed.
I dont see a huge demand in the gender studies field. Ive searched the job boards, however there is a huge demand for heating/air condition, bricklayers, plumbers... and what my son is telling me, the medical field is losing doctors and nurses at quite a big rate because of the current state of affairs.
