Shit! Riley and I usually do 2 hrs a day. Does that mean he'll get Alzheimer's too?

I’m not a daily napper, more like a couple of times a week. But, uhhh, what was this thread about?

Not a napper. Never have been.
Well, there was that time in kindergarten when we had to bring nap rugs to school. I fell asleep behind the piano and it took them a while to find me.

I've always been a daily napper. Looking forward the nap....
I had five naps every day - 15 seconds or 5 minutes
I usually relax at a stoplight, doctors' reception - I get a 30 sec nap
Sometimes I have 10 minutes of the nap and it takes feels like for two hours sleep - a refresher. If I do four of those 10 min naps. I don't need to sleep at nighttime
My few cardiologists said "you've to nap". I told him/her the little story and they said "you need to nap anyway".
Alzheimer's disease Napping with a long a few hours? undiagnosed sleeping disorder, or maybe it’s even out of boredom?

Not daily, but summer/warmer times I'm up early to ride (so less hours sleep),and then back and breakfast-- it's nice to then 'rest' for a while on the couch.

When I read this kind of "study", my inclination is to point out that windshield wipers don't cause rain.

A few years ago I went from never napping to every day. I read about that Alzheimer's link some time back. I set a 45" timer.

When I read this kind of "study", my inclination is to point out that windshield wipers don't cause rain. Yep, not a cause of the nasty "A", a result of the nasty "A". As noted in the study itself (but not in the article about the study): “It is plausible that our observed associations of excessive daytime napping at baseline, and increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease during follow-up, may reflect the effect of Alzheimer’s disease pathology at preclinical stages,” the authors noted. When you start napping 8 to 9 hours a day (while wandering about lost at night), there is a really good chance you might have Alzheimer's... or a drinking problem.

Maybe once a month or so, I may take a 20 minute nap. 20 minutes seems perfect to me.

I don't have a drinking problem except when I can't get a drink. (Freely stolen from Tom Waits.)

Technically, all of my life so far has been at pre-Alzheimer's stages...

When I read about the study, I understood that correlation is not necessarily causation. But there were other good reasons for limiting my nap time. The study just tipped me over the edge.

For a while in grad school, the combination of class/teaching scheduling and young-guy social activities led me to taking a three-hour nap early every evening--because I would stay up until 1 or 2 a.m. and then have to teach at 8 or 9. And in those days, my normal sleep-need was ten hours.
There's a don't-do-this/always-do-this health story at least once a week in the WSJ and NYT, and I find myself not getting all het about them. Partly because I'm too old to die young, and partly because I wonder about the whole chain of transmission, from experimental/study design through conclusion-drawing to reporting. The one that has had me especially skeptical lately insists that any light, no matter how dim, is bad for one's sleep rhythms, with possible dire overall effects on general health. And god forbid you let any blue light into your eyeballs for several hours before bedtime.
Something very well could be going on in these situations, but I'm not putting up blackout curtains in our bedroom. In fact, I leave a night light on in the bathroom so I don't experience the adverse health effects of falling down and breaking my hip when I get up to pee at 2 a.m. And 4 a.m. And 6 a.m.
Or maybe the night light is messing with my bladder. Maybe I should apply for a research grant.

I usually take a nap after my 15 hour work day. Sometimes I don't wake up til 4AM.

We have two night lights on because we live with the enhanced peril of a black lab who loves to lie in the shadows between me and the bathroom. I've stepped on him and tripped on him but never really hurt either of us.

I do nap at times. Late afternoon is my worst time of day, so if I’m inactive, I have a tendency to doze off. But, yes, I’m not sure whether they mean it’ll cause it, or it’s already too late and it’s an indicator. If so, it’s been that way for an awful long time. So I might as well nap and enjoy it.

Sorry, I missed that last post--dozed off at the keyboard.
What did you say your name is? Do you post here often? What do you think of President Ford?
