About the time I first started at U-ILL ('70), ILLIAC IV had been shut down/moved from there due to protests. Now, the computer center where that was going to be (and where I then played with some punch cards) is a square block-sized monolithic building.
Who know what they do there now...

In case you are wondering what you get for $115 plus tax:
My thought process?
It uses the wrong type of capsule (K67 instead of K87 or C12, which have isolated split back plates for doing multiple patterns correctly) and no de-emphasis circuit for handling the sibilant nature of the capsule. The body is a bit too small for my normal C12 board, so I'll have to make another, I'll keep the tube mount and go from there. The transformer is awful as well, so I'll replace it with a cinemag 13114 12:1 designed for C12 clones ($65) change out the capsule for a C12 ($169) and a better tube ($35). The power supply looks okay, but needs some changes and an adjustable bias voltage, so I will probably just replace the main board in it with one of mine ($30). So, for a grand total of just over $400 and some sweat equity, I should have a mic that in sound quality rivals those for 10x that price.
See what cheap people will do to save a buck.

Last project I worked on with a team in Champaign was a bull sperm sorter, so don't ask me.

For those of you that need some "light" reading:
For all things audio:
For Condenser Mics:
For any kind of mic:
