I hope Don Jr doesn’t shoot it down over Montana. The debris might hit Steve’s horse!

Retired intelligence person on CNN discussed this. Likely not any better info than what a satellite can gather, and you just need to cross your fingers and hope that it overflies the right place at the right time. Also quite visible early on, you are aware and know it's coming (same with satellites). Altitude was "well above" normal aircraft, so maybe 50,000ft or more, perhaps varying with atmospheric pressure, temps, etc. No doubt that signals going to/from the balloon are being monitored. (perhaps interfered with a little, tho you wouldn't want to show your hand ) One reason for no shoot-down is that the US surveys china from high altittudes, from within what china says is its own zone, but which the US doesn't recognize and flies in anyway--so the US goes into those areas for a look-down on china, both visual and electronic (no doubt dprk, too). So the logic goes--if the US shoots this balloon down, china may then have an excuse to do the same with whatever the US has close to them. The analyst didn't say so, but "concern over falling debris" is just a PR smokescreen for the public. As for shooting it down, a separate story said this was once tried, many rounds into some kind of balloon from fighters--which didn't result in it being shot down. OTOH, if it comes down on its own, there'll be a competitive scramble to get to it and see what it is. edit: and if it's 8+ miles up, what rifle is going to shoot that far--up--at a moving target? Like thinking you'll pop a party balloon with a BB gun at 100 yards.

It’ll probably burst and come down in a cornfield somewhere and they’ll find a note attached to it from a high school science project team of kids.

Where is it now? There must be a tracker online somewhere.

It’s going to Disneyland. Mike A Disney Park would be a hit in China but don't invest in it as they will nationalize it in a heartbeat.

It's just my pork fried rice delivery. Which may not make it, depending on the arm strength of these folks.

CBS News
The F-22 fired the Sidewinder at the balloon from an altitude of 58,000 feet. The balloon at the time was between 60,000 and 65,000 feet.
F-15 Eagles flying from Barnes Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts, supported the F-22, as did tankers from multiple states including Oregon, Montana, South Carolina and North Carolina. Canadian forces also helped track the overflight of the balloon.
The Navy has deployed the destroyer USS Oscar Austin, the cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the USS Carter Hall, an amphibious landing ship in support of the effort.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Chinese could give a rat's ass about us shooting the balloon down. It had a solar array for power and had already transmitted any info it had. Once it was over the Atlantic its job was done.

Chinese Balloon. Interesting group. I saw them in the auditorium at IU back in 1970. They spoke almost no English but when they sang they sounded like they were from California. They had a real surfer sound and they played Polar White Stratocasters. The bass player had a black Precision bass. They were on the way to fame and fortune but somehow they ticked off the Chinese government and when they went home, they all wound up in work camps and disappeared from view. Maybe they are out now. If so, the music has stopped.
