I love Triumphs (hate orange, though). When I was stationed in Iceland, two of my best buddies ordered 650cc bikes from England -- a Triumph and a BSA, rode them around base, and then had them shipped home at the end of their Keflavik stint. I was super-jealous, but after I got to Newport, R.I., for the last two years of duty, I bought a nice red CB350 that served me well, including a trip to Nova Scotia. Buck's BSA looked just like this one:

Nice, clean-looking bike, Steve. But I think potential buyers would need to have a special love for vintage, off-road, Triumphs.

I remember being behind someone on an old British single cylinder, a BSA. Probably about the same vintage as this one. We were at a stop light, and the entire bike, and the rider, were vibrating to the beat of that one cylinder. It didn’t look comfortable.

I remember being behind someone on an old British single cylinder, a BSA. Probably about the same vintage as this one. We were at a stop light, and the entire bike, and the rider, were vibrating to the beat of that one cylinder. It didn’t look comfortable. Well, the Lightning that I posted was a twin, but they vibrated quite a bit, too.

Well, the Lightning that I posted was a twin, but they vibrated quite a bit, too. I was looking at the original bike, the Triumph.

I rented a Triumph Bonnie 900 before buying my used Yammy. Nice. But I don’t like the pedals back in line with my Fanny. I’m a cruiser kinda guy. But I don’t like the big heavy Harleys either.

That’s a little bitty bike, there. Oh yeah too small for me. I guess I was struck by how clean and vintage it was and the fact that it was in BF Montana. Not that I'm looking anyway. In the late 80's I spent a few years in NorCal riding a Honda VF100F Interceptor. Way too fast and way too top heavy. Several close calls that could have easily killed me, 2 low speed lay downs, going 110mph+ on 280 north at 4 in the morning to get to a jobsite in Marin. After one of the close calls sold it and never looked back.

In the late 80's I spent a few years in NorCal riding a Honda VF100F interceptor. Way too fast and way too top heavy. Several close calls that could have easily killed me, 2 low speed lay downs, going 110mph+ on 280 north at 4 in the morning to get to a jobsite in Marin. After one of the close calls sold it and never looked back. About 10 years ago, a neighbor was selling one of those, and I walked over to look at it. He said he'd be fine with me taking it for a spin, so I did. I'd never ridden one before, and my life flashed before my eyes several times -- holy CRAP!

After one of the close calls sold it and never looked back. That's where Honda has gone with their classic V-Four. I had the cruiser version, the Magna, that has been discontinued since 2002. I miss that thing. Very smooth running engine. No vibration at all. I had it to 100 once. It was purring like a kitten. Plenty more top end if I was brave enough. They make a Rebel 1100 nowadays that intrigues me. It's not the V-Four. It's the same engine as the Africa Twin. But I was too cheap to pay $10k. So, I got a used Yammy Bolt 942 instead for half that. Nice enough. But the V-twin vibrates an annoying amount if you're going for a long ride.

Here's the Magna 1100. Prolly the same basic engine as your Interceptor. They only made it 2 years. It was called the Widow-maker.

It got stolen, and I was still alive, with all arms and legs attached…and decided that was enough.

The Magna was a great bike, untill the engine fried because of a design flaw that caused a lack of oil in critical locations inside the engine. That's probably why they only made it a couple years. Yamaha FJR1300. fastest bike I've riden. If I pushed the red line a little I could hit 100 mph in second gear, it was a 5 speed. Mine was geared for a top end of 168 mph. It was too much for an old man to handle and I reluctantly got rid of it. I do still miss it.

In 1975 I test-rode a used Kawasaki 750 2-stroke for a roommate who wanted to get into bike riding. It was extremely quick for its time. I accidentally wheeled shifting into second and again into third. I convinced him it was the wrong bike to start on. He took my advice and is still alive. The model became known as "the widow maker." It was loud, smoked and vibrated. Power was peaky.

That looks more like the 72, Joe Byrd (who many will remember with his wife Debbie at one of the idiot jams) has a 73 painted to look like this along with a 500 and a 400 from the same era. He has specialized in rebuilding them and has done so for many people. You can see him in a recent cycle drag video on YouTube discussing it from the two-stroke get together at deals gap.
