What's going on in your neighborhood lately?
Across the road from us, the city is finally doing a major restoration on the Soldiers and Sailors Arch at the Grand Army Plaza. This is a monument to the fallen soldiers and sailors during what Shannon refers to as "the war of Northern aggression."
Normally looked like this:
Now looks like this:

In my old San Jose neighborhood, that's what it would look like if it was tented for termite treatment.

In mine? Just the random burglaries, car thefts, and murders
No biggie.

Wild parsnips are coming up in the ditch along my drive. Nasty stuff. I need to get out there and spray tomorrow.

Fortunately we have yet to see any of that around here. But wild parsnips are equally as nasty, and walking through a patch of them has been the cause of many emergency room visits.

It’s quiet here. The occasional homeless encampment, but then, we keep building social housing, which at least tries to help. We have drug addicts, but we do also try to help them. We have universal medical care, so if my neighbours, or the homeless people, or the drug addicts, get sick or hurt, we try to help. Not everyone wants to be helped. Not everyone can be helped. But if there’s a good corner of our modern world to be, I’m in it.

The deer on the sidewalk is sort of unusual but the huge chicken walking down the other side of the street is more unusual. Is it about to cross the road? Why?

Here it's hot. The only real news is it's been dry too so the normal jungle vegetation has never really gotten going.
We've got 2 new pups, a 1.5-2 year old English Setter mix rescue mutt who we've had since February. She's the sweetest pup we've ever known. And her new sister, a 12 week old Irish Setter pup from a breeder in Oklahoma who's a certified terrorist. Much of our free time is spent managing her destructive tendencies.
Pure normal here.

Further straining the water table?

Exciting event. Our road got striped yesterday. Everyone went to the end of their driveways with folding chairs to watch the machine go by.

Exciting event. Our road got striped yesterday. Everyone went to the end or their driveways with folding chairs to watch the machine go by. A poor county hired an 18 girl for a summer job hand painting a center stripe on county roads. The supervisor told her she was expected to paint a mile of stripe per day. The first day she far exceeded her quota by painting two miles of stripe. The second day her production dropped to one and a half miles, still above expectations. But, the third day she only painted three quarters of a mile of stripe. So the supervisor talked to her at the end of the day and asked what went wrong. "Well," said the girl, "I'm getting farther from the bucket."

(if I were a terrorist, I'm not sure if I would bother getting certified. Seems like it is just asking for trouble.)
