Reminds me...younger daughter is (I think) the only person in her work group without a PhD. Occasionally a new PhD hire starts treating her like an inferior. When that occurs, the boss tells the new hire that she's more essential than he is. The new hire gets the message and treats her with more respect.
People have a tendency to put everyone into some sort of hierarchy and act accordingly. I don't exempt myself. I stereotype the guys who mow my lawn. I'm polite and friendly to them but I still put them in a slot.

Like my parents, I am state educated. I have few academic achievements and no professional qualifications, rather having worked in lots of 'low status' occupations. I'm not anywhere near any "elite caste" such as Brooks talks about. I am not sure how my story illustrates Brooks' argument.

Wow! I guess it has been a while. Not only did I not remember having any DVR songs to "brush up", I didn't even know who he was. I went to YT to refresh myself in an attempt to regain those memories, but they didn't return. After listening to a few, I couldn't envision this version of myself doing any of them, so, sorry coach, probably not going to happen. I have a couple of Van Morrisons- best I can do. Peace.

This discussion reminded me of the first time I heard this song on the radio. Houston, 1968, on our Pacifica radio station. A white guy doing a black song about an addictive drug. Huh? This was a novelty in my buttoned-down world. I'm still impressed by the guitar-playing.

This is the tune that introduced me to DVR--it's the last item in one of the Oak fingerpicking books, and I still can't manage the whole thing, though pieces of it leaked into my playing.
Here's a video where you can see how Michael Neverisky does it:
But here's where I first heard Dave do it, with the Ragtime Jug Stompers:

Wow! I guess it has been a while. Not only did I not remember having any DVR songs to "brush up", I had a similar reaction. I didn’t recall hearing you play any Van Ronk tunes. Doc may be thinking of another surveyor.

A great tune that brings back many fond memories. My late brother Paul used to play that. He had it down and well. He also did what I guess was a Van Ronk interpretation of Merle Travis’s Saturday Night Shuffle. I learned that from Paul and used to play it but I became dissatisfied with it because it sounded way too folky compared to what Merle actually played. In 1963 I worked with a black actor/singer named Herb Jones in Chicago. We played the folk clubs and bars on Chicago’s Near North side. One of the tunes we did was an arrangement of Van Ronk’s Green Rocky Road. Part of that song comes from children’s street songs, sung to warn prostitutes upstairs that the police were coming. Herb had direct experience with that and also knew the calls of the alleyway rag men. Herb had a terrific voice and really nailed it. Since then I’ve come up with another arrangement of Green Rocky Road I kinda like. It’s basically Van Ronk’s but with more chords.

I wasn’t referring to particular songs, just the overall sound and feel.

I wasn’t referring to particular songs, just the overall sound and feel. Coach, I play very little of what I did with Jerry. I would joke that he was the talent and I was the eye candy. I would characterize that stuff as Americana with some classic rock thrown in. After his strokes, I didn't play anything for over 10 years. In 2019 we were parked in an Orlando area RV park and they had a fire pit where a guy brought his 12 string out and played a few. I picked it up, strummed a couple of chords, then gave it back. Later I found my dad's old Fender box that my mother bought him in 1971 or so under a bed in a spare room at my daughter's house. I brought it to the 5th wheel and started strumming around. I received some encouragement from some of the locals so I started playing again but without Jerry I stopped trying to flat pick or do anything but basic rhythm and focused on just singing. Now I just play what moves me and try to sing them as best I can. I have a pretty eclectic batch from 60s, a few classic rock types that don't require a lead break, mostly country. There is (IMHO) some pretty good country that they loosely call "Red Dirt Country"- coming out of Texas, of course: Cody Johnson, Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen (my latest infatuation), and others that I have mixed with the older country stuff. If someone doesn't like Country, they probably will not care for it but I can only do what I can do and I don't even try to play lead or fingerstyle anymore. I don't need the frustration . Looking forward to it. Love & Light, ya'll.
