Incoherent concerto for bullhorn and dog whistle. For some reason I'm reminded of "Okie from Muskogee."

… Come to think of it, the byplay between Merle and Judy Hayden looks and sounds real-time. Also note the shoutout to Dave Barbour and Peggy Lee at the end. It occurred to me that the name Dave Barbour may be unfamiliar to some of us here so I scrounged up a Soundie of Peggy with her then husband Dave. They may already have divorced by the time Travis and Hayden made that Too Much Sugar Soundie.

So that repeats three of four times, right?

I think we already found out you're a Communist from the '30s or '40s' or 50's or 60's so this makes seance, for you. The other guy makes sense for us.

Wow. That one is just awful. Pretty much the comment we used to make in high school but refuse to repeat.

Paul Kay, I started the Sixteen Tons thread. I was considering including it in a set I'll play in October. I wondered if anyone remembered it. The answers made it clear that many people remember it but it doesn't seem to have been done to death (like "Hallelujah," say). I can't fingerpick any more but I found an arrangement for strummers that's a four-chord sequence played over and over. Works for me. I'm puzzled as to why it works but it works. Don, keep in mind that Merle really just strummed behind it while singing. He was using a thumb pick and index finger but, most often, when he performed it he just strummed behind it. The only instrumentation he would add was that easy two-bar single-note interlude that sounds like the notes for “I owe my soul to the company store.” You could play it with either a thumb pick or flat pick and it should sound the same. Just sayin’.

Dub, when I watched the video I didn't pay any attention to how he was playing. Thanks for pointing it out.
What puzzled me was the chord progression. Am-G-D-E. I'm not surprised by the first three chords but I couldn't figure out why an E worked.

What’s funny is Anthony’s repudiation of the right wing folks claiming this song represents their beliefs. He said the people on the stage at the Republican debate were who he was talking about. His own politics, according to himself, is pretty well dead center. The songs a bit of a mishmash of thoughts, certainly, but hardly the anthem it was made out to be.

The Epstein pedo reference and the (confused?) punching down part about obese, poor people on welfare were always likely to be popular with some listeners. However, Anthony has also since declared that America's "diversity" is what "makes us strong" which might loosen the enthusiastic embrace of some of his previous professed admirers.

The progression I use is Em -Em/D - C7 - B7 The thing I like about playing it in this key is that the high 3 strings can ring open as you play the Em/D. And the melody falls neatly under the C7 and B7 . There’s also a big shift in my vocal range required between Am and Em.

It’s actually the 5 chord of Am Harmonic. Am, (Am natural,) it’s Em. Just to be musically pedantic. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

@ Russell Letson So, I'm curious. With which dead Communists are you trying to communicate?
