If he's up for it, I recommend a "Michelle"... Proof there must be a God.

…unless I'm writing for a magazine that prefers "mic," my posts about microphones will read "mike." (I don't call out apostrophe errors here--I only proofread my own copy.) You, above all of us here, are definitely licensed to use mike when referring to a microphone.

Well, I was going to call my new one Clyde, but my faithful camel objected.

I prefer "mic" over "mike," but I believe the editor to the Northwest (of me, not the US) prefers "mike." It must make more sense to me as it's a shortening of the actual word, not inserting extra letters/changing existing letters. Then again, I prefer "fridge" over "frige," (or frig) so go figure. I am not consistent; I contain multitudes. I prefer "mike" to "mic" and "fridge" over any other variant because of phonics -- those spellings invite correct pronunciation, where "mic" invites saying "mick." But our music writers uniformly prefer "mic," so when editing for the paper, I let them have that.

I wonder if I should start calling bicycles bics? Those are the lighters you use at rock concerts.

I have never known a single musician who misspells "mic".
Ever.

I have never read an on-line forum where multiple posters don't make the its/it's and grocer's apostrophe errors. Ever. But I live with it.
(And there is such a thing as usage change-in-progress. Also multiple acceptable usages. Ask any qualified observer. For example, an English teacher or copy editor or working journalist.)

I've never met a working musician who uses mics that's a qualified observer.
