Well, I have found the Bumblebee works for me perfectly, both physically, and tonally. I'd like to try one of those picks, but I wouldn't want to send the $$$ off without trying one first.
I agree in principle with what you're saying. I'm as picky about my picks as the next guy. I'm just don't know that that material would be that much better to me. Never tried a real tortoise shell pick, or a wegen - but I don't flatpick, either.

A good friend here, Steve Armstrong, two time American Fingerstyle award winner and a very fine player, also prefers the Fred Kelly Bumble Bee picks. It isn't the cost, he just likes the way they work for him. I tend to favor the Speed Pick for thumbpicking. - Dub

I've got some speed picks, too. They're pretty cool little beasts - Doyle Dykes uses them, also. But I just can't get the tone of them that I can out of the Bumblebee - it comes across to harsh to me. Like you said, it's how they work for you, because Doyle gets a pretty sweet tone, for sure.
It's funny, I started use the bumblebee, because I can switch to flatpicking with them more easily. But I find a lot of the time, I use the alternating thumb/index for fast runs, as it works into fingerpicking arrangements more easily.

Pulled out the pickbox. Been messing with the speed picks, (I have two,) a Fred Kelly Slickpick, the Bumblebee, a metal thumbpick, and an old dunlop. It's interesting. The speedpicks are pretty good, but I can't flatpick worth a damn with them. Don't know if you've ever tried the Slickpick - it's my second favourite for sure, just hits the strings nicely for me. The metal one - nope. The dunlop just doesn't work either.
It's fun.

www.fredkellypicks.com/I've been using the regular picks -- white for heavy gauge. Out of the box, they work great for me --better tone than speed picks/slick picks IMO and quick enought hrough the strings for travis style

I use the Fred Kelly "bird" picks I don't know what the proper name for them is but I've never had a store not know what I ment. ;D
For flat pickin' I use the big triangle Fenders in heavy I think they are #351.
