Family traditions. I had a very nice afternoon/evening. For the first time, my daughter and son-in-law, Warren, did Thanksgiving. Sue and I drove down in the city to their 3-flat. Our other daughter and her beau were there as well as my mother, my brother and his wife and kids. Only sad part was that Sue's mom, Berneice, wasn't feeling up to the trip into the city. So, she didn’t come. But we brought her home a big plate of the works.
The neat part was seeing my kids grown up and taking over a family tradition. It was very nice and homey and easy. It gave me a feeling that what Sue and I did was important to them, and that they are ready to pick up the torch and carry it. I suddenly feel like I’m part of a continuum. It’s scary and heart warming at the same time.
It was 25 years ago when Sue and I took over the Thanksgiving tradition from her mom and dad. Wilbert passed away 12 years ago. Bernice is 91 and doing pretty well, though she didn’t feel up to the trip. I remember back then being nervous about my first time performing the male duty of carving the bird. It made me chuckle today when Warren nervously asked for my help with the same task.
Everyone jumped in and helped with all kinds of kitchen work; before and after dinner. It was exciting. It felt right. But somehow I feel a little bitter/sweet right now thinking back.
I think I just passed a milestone on the road of life I didn’t see coming.
Happy Thanksgiving, all.
