As I said in my thread about the weekend, our friend's car caught fire on the highway going to interior - she got her, her two daughters, and her purse out. Lots of people stopped to help, and one snapped shots, out of interest, and emailed them to her to help with her insurance claim.

Egads! Your friend and her daughters are very fortunate people. Or, better stated, your friend's daughters a very fortunate to have a mother that could get them out of something like this. Have they figured out what happened yet?

No, they may never. Friend who is an insurance adjuster was there, and the fire was so fierce, it probably burned up whatever hose or connection was the problem. We'll see if they find anything.

When you said fire, you really meant fire.
They didn't by chance have a Cargo in the trunk, did they? Cause I bet it would've survived.

Say, is that a corolla? I just saw one of those burning by the side of the road about 4 weeks ago, no kidding.
The reason I noticed the make (aside from the obvious) is that K and I had an older corolla (88 or so) that burned by the side of the road on the way to a wedding gig. No joke; we were by the side of the road in a small town in Washington pulling AER amps and gig bags out and throwing them onto this lady's lawn, while said lady stood about 75 feet away looking on in shock while watering her lawn with a garden hose!
Thanks for the help, Lady.
Ours was the result of the catalytic converter going out, heating the transmission tunnel to kitchen burner specs, and catching the noise insulation on fire. I'd bet a dollar that this might be the issue with your friend's car; it's not as uncommon on older corollas as one might like to think. Hers looks to be a 90's era?
Ours died a firey death that fine summer day but, by that time, we had gotten our money out of it. We payed 300 for that little box, and took it on two tours to California (one with Dorian Michael in the back seat for 4 dates or so... I think we were driving that thing when we met Doug Young for the first time). We saved more in gas on the first trip down than we payed for the car.
Lloyd Baggs mused aloud that the value of our car went up by more than ten times when I put my guitar into the back...
An interesting and scary phenomenon, car fires. Later corollas definitely burn brighter.

Interesting, Sidhe - it's certainly a Corolla, not sure of the year. Thank goodness you got your stuff out.

Yes, the damage would have been a whole lot more than 300 bucks if the AER and the guitars burned up, Rick! The next car we bought was a later model chevy lumina; it worked (for the most part) right up until we got T-boned by drunks. I'm hoping for better car Karma the third time around...
