The paying kind.
It's been made final that I've moved to a new job within the same company.
In a nod to Tamarack and his twisted notification system, I still haven't officially been told that I've got the job or when I start or if there's a promotion or more money in it for me. But I was sent the minutes from a meeting of the international group that I now belong to, and my new boss announced to everyone else that I've been appointed. I'm even supposed to attend the next meeting, I think.
But such is life in a big corporation. The official announcement will probably come next week, no doubt retroactive to the beginning of the month, and I guess I'll find out if I'm making more when the check comes at the end of the month.
I think.
Regardless, I've been pulled from my technical position to spearhead an operational development program half the time and I will be working as kind of a US-based consultant for our construction and marine divisions doing regulatory work with off-road emissions regulations the other half.
More money or not, it's a great move for me. I was nominated for the OD position (reporting nominally to the VP of our North American arm) without my knowledge and, from everything I've heard from insiders, by popular acclaim from damn near everybody. And the regulatory slot brings me full circle to stuff I've done forever.
So, through no fault of my own (at least in the begging and pleading arse-kissing sense), I've bounced from the fire of '07 product development (launching in 2 weeks) to a really nice MBA executive staff sort of slot. And with a really good, talented technical rep intact.
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky!
The hours will probably be more regular. I'll still need to travel some, but it will be to attend industry meetings, conferences, or training sessions (currently in NC, then France in January, Finland in Feb, NC in March, and Sweden in April) and not to go to Canada to freeze my arse off trying to rescue an angry customer with a truck that won't work. And I'll be paid to read and follow politics and industry news and really pay attention to it.
Considering it's only been 3 years since the last 15 month lay-off, it's a friggin' great time to be alive.
Merry Christmas!
