Cameron was listening to an episode of This American Life from 1996 and they played a song that was sung my Newley.
The lyrcs start out....
Look around you, Mr. Clown You're drowning in your dreams A sea of strangers each one reaching out for you
Make us laugh Mr Funny Man Fame at last Mr. Funny Man Could love you crave be waiting in some woman's heart
Oh must you spend these endless nights alone among the crowd bowing for their laughter in the dark wiping off the custard pie that life just loves to throw Knowing when the audience goes home that you'll be all alone
Look at me! Look at me! I'm the Funny Man Have you ever heard such clever stuff before? Applauded Time Magazine he's the laughing machine I'm the man who makes you laugh....
----------
Ok, that is the beginning of the song. Great tune. Sounds like it might be part of a show but I can't tell. Solo, no other singers. Lots of strings. Has anyone heard that song before? Know what it is from? I have dug and dug and Google is NOT helping me out.

Wasn't he married to Joan Collins for a while? I think he co-wrote the score for Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We had a few of his albums in da house when I was a kid.

I found that LP, sealed, on eBay for $13. Now I need to find out how much Cameron wants that song...

Stop the World I Want To Get Off
Roar of the Greasepaint and Smell of the Crowd
The first one was a favorite back in high school, my running buds and I would act out scenes, What Kind of Fool Am I came from the show.
Yeah I like Newly. And I think he was married to Joan Collins for a bit.

"Who can I turn to, when nobody needs me..." Tony Bennett made it famous, but Anthony wrote it. He was married to Joan Collins; this I got from reading her autobiography (really). "Stop The World - I Want to Get Off," the name of a musical he cowrote, has stuck in my head ever since I read the book.
Anthony Newley also co-wrote the "Goldfinger" theme, and the "Oompa Loompa" song from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
