Ha! This may be the greatest thing in the history of the world, ever: The Nation is releasing a book of essays slamming Sarah Palin for being the rollicking jalopy of folksy horseshit that she is titled, Going Rouge, An American Nightmare, on the same day that Palin’s autobiography titled, Going Rogue, An American Life, hits the bookstores. The two covers are strikingly similar, featuring similar fonts and photographs, with the biggest differences between the two being that The Nation’s book has dark storm clouds on it’s cover and won’t be filled with indecipherable gibberish capable of making a sane person want to stab themselves in the eye repeatedly with a rusty spoon. This is so amazing that I sincerely want to perform unspeakable acts of freakery upon Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, just to show my appreciation

I don't see the need to take Palin on anymore. She has pretty much self destructed. Her approval ratings are terribel and 70% in a recent poll said she isn't qualified to be President. Only 52% of Republicans currently think she is qualified and they ran her as Vice President a year ago. Of course quitting her job as Governor actually didn't do much to make the GOP faithful trust her to stick to anything. She is very popular with conservatives, but since they are a small block of the GOP, it is doubtful she can get any nomination and if nominated would drive moderate anybodies running for the doors. But she will have a hard concrete lock on that solid 15% of the population.

Tramp, I see a tail wagging the GOP dog, as in New York's 23rd district. Around here, "the base" still reveres and admires Palin and continues to parrot whatever Fox chooses to put up for them to believe. And for reasons that I can almost grasp, the rest of the party caters to that fraction. Now, maybe it's the same as it was with the Christian right under Bush--give lip service during the election cycle and do business as usual when you're in power. But I begin to fear that the GOP is feeling its way toward a genuine brown-shirt revolution, since the base has proved itself to be so reliable in its responses to having its buttons pushed. And, to be fair, the base has found some buttons in the party's operating system and pushes right back. It's a pathological feedback loop.

The poll I heard this morning, on MSNBC, said that 22% of Americans claim to be liberals, 38% conservatives and the rest moderates. Some portion of the 22% are still attacking Palin because she scares the hell out of them. It's the same as them still attacking Bush even though much of the Bush policies that they attack are being continued by President Obama because knowing what he now knows he doesn't have a better answer. I'm not a Palin fan but I'm starting to believe that the Democrats ran the only candidate they could find with less qualifications than she had. She could at least make a decision. I don't think there's much chance of the Republicans running Palin anytime soon. They may be dumb but they're not that dumb. She can only get them some portion of the 38%, nowhere near enough to win.

I agree with Russell. There is a significant number of people out there who think that Sarah Palin is the GOPs great hope for the future. My own brother seems to think that the liberal media was "too hard on her". I am of the opinion that every time she opened her mouth a boatload of stupid fell out.
There was nothing, absolutely nothing that she has said in any speech that I've heard or read that was remotely presidential. The vast majority of it was nothing more than right wing talking points and/or lies. I mean seriously: "Obama is paling around with terrorist", "The government run health care system will have death panels that will decide if your grandmother will be allowed to live." What a load of bullshit.
How about the very real problem that she was suppose to be in a position of power just one step away from the president and that her duty would be to protect the constitution. And yet, when asked if she could name even a single Supreme Court decision she couldn't come up with anything other than "Roe vs. Wade". She doesn't seem to have the knowledge of the Constitution and the supreme court's role in defining that Constitution that a first year political science major would have.
If the Republicans don't want to be seen as a bunch of irrational right wing Christian nut jobs they should distant themselves from her (and Glen Beck and O'Reilly and Hannity and Rush) as soon as possible.

It will be interesting to see the sales numbers for the 2 books in a few weeks. I'm betting the Palin book outsells the anti-Palin book by 8 or 10 to 1.
On Edit: Betting the reviews are reverse of the sales.

Satire is what closes on Saturday night. On the other hand, I've seen true-believer campaigns push ill-written crap to bestsellerdom before. Almost everybody who tried to read them agreed that L. Ron Hubbard's "decology" was beyond wretched, but Scientologists bought enought copies (sometimes returning them to the stores) to push them up the lists. Palin fans are just as deluded as Scientologists, just not as well organized.

The poll I heard this morning, on MSNBC, said that 22% of Americans claim to be liberals, 38% conservatives and the rest moderates. That may be because since Reagan "liberal" has become a label second only to "station wagon" as a marketing mark-of-Cain. If you want to map political attitudes and values and program support, you need to focus on specifics. As for the notion that Obama is less qualified than Palin--surely you jest, Shirley. "At least she could make a decision." Would you like to back that hand?

The poll I heard this morning was taken by 0.003% of the population in which 87% answered honestly and of them 76% understood the questions. The results were then broadcast and heard by 14.7% of the population. Of them, 32.3% heard the actual results without any exaggerations being made my the newcaster. Of those that heard the actual results, 26.6% were paying attention to the whole story, and of them, 52.3% remembered what they had just heard. By contrast, barber poles are rarely misunderstood.
