Is there some reason why she looks up and to the left? Do people do that when they think or when they lie, I done forgot? I think Russia's up there.

I still think that as badly as Palin shot herself in the foot last year, the left wouldn't be wasting their time attacking her now if there wasn't something about her that scares the hell out of them. She's a threat or she wouldn't be worth their time. I don't see it but I think they do. I can understand them picking at Limbaugh and Hannity and Beck because they have daily audiences and that gives them some measure of power but I don't understand continuing to give that much attention to Palin unless she's a threat. By attacking her, they make her more famous than she otherwise would be as far as I can tell.

We only mock her when she sticks her head up to promote herself or to insert herself into various debates. And it's not Palin I care about--it's the gullible and the fixated and delusional who admire and support her that bother me. I have to live in the political and policy environment they want to reshape, and their vision of the world is distorted enough to make them a danger to the republic. I say again, I live in Bachmann territory, and there are people here who live in a fantasyland that bears small resemblance to the world I see--and they vote.

But there's not really that many of them so if they vote for a loser what difference does it make? There has to be more to it than that. It's as if they're afraid that all the women voters would vote for her just because she's a woman and I don't believe that for a minute.

Ha! This may be the greatest thing in the history of the world, ever: The Nation is releasing a book of essays slamming Sarah Palin for being the rollicking jalopy of folksy horseshit that she is titled, Going Rouge, An American Nightmare, on the same day that Palin’s autobiography titled, Going Rogue, An American Life, hits the bookstores. The two covers are strikingly similar, featuring similar fonts and photographs, with the biggest differences between the two being that The Nation’s book has dark storm clouds on it’s cover and won’t be filled with indecipherable gibberish capable of making a sane person want to stab themselves in the eye repeatedly with a rusty spoon. This is so amazing that I sincerely want to perform unspeakable acts of freakery upon Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, just to show my appreciation I just read the OP. (I think I'm doing everything backward today.) Half of me thinks the "Going Rouge" book is a stupid and petty waste of time. The other half of me, the evil side, the side I like, is hoping that a whole lot of Palin fans accidentally buy "Going Rouge."

Oh, Marshall--you think it's mean-spirited and in bad taste to make fun of a tirelessly self-promoting public figure who has leveraged her public service career into a seven-figure book deal (of course, she had to pay a chunk of it to the "collaborator"--I'd want six figures to tackle that job)? As for backfiring--for her core audience, Sarah is bulletproof. So the rest of us might as well get something out of the spectacle, and I vote for the pleasures of merciless mockery. Tirelessly self-promoting public figure ? ? ? ? Which one of them isn't ? ? ? ? ?Sure, she's bullet-proof to her core audience. And also sure, she an easy whipping boy for her core detractors. But there's a fertile field of minds in the middle that are tired of both extremes. Sometimes it's just best to let an opponent make a fool out of themselves instead of jumping in and doing the same yourself.

Lot to agree with there. "if a Republican wins in 2012, and I have no idea who that might be" I don't either. Huckabee? Romney? I have no idea. Huckabee, god I hope not. That would be going backwards to the worst of the GOP. But he's likable on TV and in today's world that counts a lot. I don't think a whole lot of Romney as a candidate but at least he doesn't give me the feeling of snake handling religious handlers behind the curtian. < Shiver>

I don't think Huckabee can draw any better than Palin, they sort of have the same disciples. Romney at least understands business but I don't trust businessmen much more than politicians and a businessman turned politician is a little scary. Romney started the Massachusetts health care plan, which is bankrupting Massachusetts and still they have a lot of uninsured even though it's mandatory. He claims it's not his fault and the thing was mis-managed after he left but I don't see anything surprising about what happened. Massachusetts is a mis-managed state since I was born there and probably before that. I don't think Romney can win the Presidency either. He'll get hit over the head with the Massachusetts experience. 2012 may be the year of the outsider, IMHO. 3rd parties have seldom won much but the moderate majority in the country may be getting tired of the major parties. 2010 will be interesting. We may see an Independent Speaker of the House. Members of parties now, may run as Independents just to escape the baggage of the party, either party, and they may win if they can convince the folks they're neither Republicans nor Democrats. There's no reason an Independent can't raise money on the Internet like Obama did and then not need the party backing. That would drive the party bosses nuts. That would be fun.

The interesting thing is, the candidates have to get past the primaries. And the early ones happen in states where Palin and Huckabee would have a much larger draw than they will in the general election. That could seriously screw with the Republican planning.
Farheed Zakaria wrote a book called "The Future of Freedom" in which he claims that America is suffering from an excess of democracy. The reason that the congress doesn't seem to work very well is that there is no longer any party discipline because the hold on the candidates has been weakened. Where before politicians were dependent on their parties to be selected and to get endorsements and money, that is no longer true. Each candidate has become an independent entrepreneur who raises his own money and support directly, thus becoming beholden to too many extreme positions.

I'm going to run for President in 2012 on platform of fiscal responsibility and common sense foreign policy.
My stance will be to veto any budget that doesn't trim the debt by at LEAST 10% a year, and my foreign policy will best be described as, "I don't give a crap what you do with your own piece of shit failed-state totally insignificant country, but remember two things. One, don't ever ask me for aid again if you are being a shithead to your own people and those around you. Two, Delta Force works 24/7."
My political party will be called the Peoples Democratic Republican Workers Green and Stuff Party.
Our motto will be "Play Ball With Us or We'll Shove the Bat Up Your Ass."
I figure I won't make it past New Hampshire (or whoever the hell has the first primary these days.
