OK, I have one of these: without a pickguard. I could either get the white pearloid material and make one similar to the one that comes with the guitar, or I could do something completely different. I'm thinking a pickguard design like the old Grammer guitars: WHAT SAY YE? YOU CAN VOTE FOR TWO.
Here are some colors for pickguard blanks that I like: Violet Pearl Brown shell Silver Pearl Blue Pearl Blue Shell Green Pearl Black Pearl Anaconda Paisley

What's a pick? Do you need a solder to guard it? There's another thread about that.

Buy a carbon guitar. It is a pickguard.

Make a true fashion statement - go with the paisley.

Having removed the pickguards from all my guitars, I vote "none of the above."

John, forget the pickguard. Why don't you try to comb your hair like Dolly instead?

No! Don't do it, John!Don't use that namby pamby stuff. You need a genuine MOTS [ mother of toilet seat] pick guard. Accept no substitutes.
And rhinestones! You need rhinestones. Imagine the envy of your friends and neighbors when they see your guitar's headstock decked out like this. Get on the stick son and do it up right. - Dub

I canna see your second picture, Dub. But I'm drawn to this taropatch/mandolinetto, tastefully done by a Lawrence KS luthier many many years ago (nice rhinestones on the headstock): Or perhaps this tasteful Martin C-3 archtop:

Please tell me that Martin doesn't make archtops like that anymore. Please?

Please tell me that Martin doesn't make archtops like that anymore. Please? Martin doesn't make archtops like that anymore. I have to admit that when I see your name it makes me think of where Emeril Lagasse keeps his best recipes.

Usernames are funny things. I had an audio only site I was posting recordings at and it had a limited namespace. It has also gone away now. Bruce Alan MacNeill wouldn't fit and bam was taken so I used bamfiles for my files. When I went to YouTube, I just used the same name and password so I wouldn't need to remember another one. When I came here, stupidly thinking it was a music related site, I used the same name to keep all the music stuff the same. I'm regretting the decision but so far not enough to go to the trouble of changing it. I probably should though. I will if I keep getting beat up about it, eventually, maybe, when I have time and want to go to the trouble of memorizing another name and password, or not, probably, unless it becomes a real problem, which it may be but I don't know. I'll think about it.
Thanks for the reassurance that I don't have to lower my opinion of Martin.

My image was/is the headstock of a Bacon & Day Silver Bell Symphonie banjo. But the Martin C-3 is just a gaudy so it's a fine substitute. - Dub

I want the C-3, but unfortunately it's not for sale. It's true; the "glory" days of the Martin archtop are gone. Anyway, this is the one I really want, the incomparable F-9:
