"Two gunmen in military uniforms shot and killed as many as nine people and wounded as many as 20 at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, officials said."
Ye Gads, maybe they did follow us home.
For some reason the CNN link won't copy. Go to CNN.

'The FBI said they don't believe terrorism was involved.'
Just at least two and possibly three people shooting folks on an Army base. I guess it depends on your definition of terrorism.

12 dead, 31 wounded, according to a news conference at the base. One shooter confirmed dead.
From press conference: Local police killed the shooter. One civilian police officer killed.
Shooter was a U.S. soldier, official says. Two other soldiers have been apprehended and are being questioned.
(R) U.S. Rep. McCaul, maybe unaware soldiers are suspects, calls shooting "coordinated attack against our military" and "an act of terror."

Far out.
One of Kel and I's closet friends is a part-time civilian stress counselor at that Killeen, TX base (they've indeed got a fairly progressive stress counseling program). They cut her last rotation, so she went back to Louisiana.
I guess they should have kept her tour on the payroll.
I'll shoot her a call and see if she's heard anything from the inside.

There was that group who were planning to hit the base in New Jersey not too long ago. We need to know who the shooters were.

Ok, then. My wife is on the horn with out friend right now; no new news save for this:
The hosptial shooter is Maj. Malik Hassan a recent convert to Islam. I hasten to add that correlation does not imply causation, but I'm sure this is going to hit the press like Jean Claude Van Dam on crack.

Too bad they killed him before getting a chance to question him.
Is there a second shooter, or has the story switched to a single shooter?

Now they are saying the shooter, Maj. Malik Hassan, wasn't killed. He was shot four times. FORT HOOD, Texas – An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorites said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States. The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said. Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot at least four times. in another story... The Army psychiatrist suspected of carrying a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, had come to the attention of authorities six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats, law enforcement officials said Thursday. One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades. "To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its (sic) more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," said the Internet posting. "Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."

I shudder to think of the Muslim repercussions around here. They guy isn't Muslim nearly as much as he's mentally ill, a diagnosis that transcends all religions.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says that officer who did shooting was upset about being deployed to Iraq. After chatting with our friend, I guess the only thing I feel like reporting in public is that she didn't express surprise so much as disappointment. She sees a lot of people come in for counseling who are just flat-out fuming-angry at the Army, the war, anyone involved in bogging them down in this mess to no seeming end. Angry, angry, angry, and plenty of it. Again, to keep it somewhat cryptic, the sense I got is that a lot of the Army community who have shown evidence of being problematic gets sent to that base for warehousing/evaluation. This guy certainly fits that bill, if nothing else.
