Our new discussion board porbabaly has us all thinking about reconnecting -- so let me share an recent personal experience and an upcoming experience of mine.
As you all may know Sandy Shalk and I released a CD and we're playing a radio show next week. We're very excited about it. And so I have been feverishly contacting everyone I have ever known who knew I played guitar -- I want the world to know about the Cd and the show.
Well anyways, I googled and found my first guitar instructor. A very nice lady (Judy H.) from my home town who I have not seen in about 30 years -- sad to say but we cocky college kids never visit like we should and then real life takes hold and we move away. My parent see her from time to time but I ahvent' seen her in way too long.
Well, I sent her a copy of our CD and notices for the radio show by e-mail, googling her husband's e-mail address and hoping it was the same family. It was. We are now exchanging e-mails and making plans to get together over Thanksgiving. She still teaches guitar and in fact teaches a beginner class in a format that I taught when I was still in the area. I have offered to come into her class and demonstrate some fingerstyle playing and some altered tuning concepts.
I was always nervous about playing in front of audiences but playing for Judy was so easy -- as much as I am looking forward to playing on the radio show, -- I am really looking forward to playing for this "audience of one" around Thanksgiving. It should be a special meeting.
Judy and her husband retired many years ago. His health has not been great and so it seems all the more apporpriate that I make this reconnection before it's too late. I'd hope that we get to play guitar toegther many times again but then I don't get to make that call. Hurry up Turkey day!!!
So while we're all thinking about reconnecting on this new discussion board, I figured this group should know about my reconnection and how important this will be for me. Judy taught me guitar for 5 years, ages 11 through 16 years -- at which point I was too busy with baseball and college to continue my music studies and I didn't take naother guitar lesson until I was almost 40 years old.
I can read in her e-mails how excited she is that one of her star students (yes, I was one of her stars back then) had stuck with it and continued to play beyond her years of instruction. I feel this very intense desire to "pay her back" but I am guessing that what I have done with this little CD and what I have done with my own playing will be pay back enough.
So reconnect and carry on.
