Just got word I'm one of the finalists in this year's Big Top Chautauqua "Celebration of the Song" songwriting competition next month up in Washburn, Wisc.
No idea yet who the other finalists are. The contest rules said they'd pick "up to 12."
We're supposed to play on the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 19. John Prine plays the festival the night before, and the performers that Friday night are Jonathan Edwards and Johnsmith.
Last night, my wife and I were shopping for furniture and Edwards' "Sunshine" came on the radio as we were shopping. It is one of the first songs I figured out when I was teaching myself to play the guitar.
Go figure.

Congratulations.
Are you going to post the song here for us to hear?

Congratulations.
So you perform the song and they pick a winner based on that?

Cool, and congratulations. If I remember correctly, weren't you a finalist last year as well?

I'm not sure which song I'll be doing. I entered two of them, and the lady said in her email that I should start thinking about which song I wanted to perform. I wrote back and asked if we're just supposed to do one for the competition, but she hasn't replied yet. One of the songs I entered was "The Great Flood of 2011," which I posted on the "songwriting" forum but nobody here really seemed to care for.

Hot damn. That's cool.
I missed the announcement of the deadline for entry on that one again. Kinda pissed me off. But what the heck.
Seems like they like to choose young winsome females for the Best Songwriter Award. Or so it has gone that way in the last couple years. Doesn't mean the chicks don't have a lot of talent. It's just an observation.
Good luck to you. I hope you break the mould.

I should go check those other forums here more often. I don't even think I've been to "Songwriting" here before just now.
The lyrics do work well, David. I'd like to hear what you have on the music.

Way to go David. Buy a Taylor, wear a skirt and a wig and you'll be a shoo-in.
Oh, and sing about romantic angst.

I exhausted my romantic angst a long time ago. And while Taylors are nice guitars for some, they are not for me.
And I can assure you, I wouldn't look good in a skirt. Not that I know that for sure since I've never tried one on.

Congrats, David.
Yeah, yeah, Bill tries the same line and no one believes him.
