I got an invitation from an old friend to join(?) as one of his 'professional' contacts. Does anyone know if they actually entered my email address, or is it like facebook that just takes somebodies email address book and sends 'join up' emails to everyone in it. Not sure I'm ready for another 'social' network.

Linkedin is "Facebook for Yuppies" (assuming I can reprise a term from 30 years ago).
Odds are he signed up, and then used their automatic "upload your contacts" capability and sent an invite to everyone in his email contacts.
I've got an account. I never log in anymore.

Linkedin is for people who work, I think. Retirees use Linkedout.

It's not 'social'. It's a working thing. Where it comes in handy is when you are looking for a job, as it links you to other professionals. It's a cool concept - how well it works for actually enabling finding a job, I dunno.

Yes, it is a networking thing for professional interests. I have a never-used account. Not sure of the value of staying in contact with thousands of other job seekers. I suppose one of them might pass on a lead that did not fit them.
I have a job though, so that may be why I don't use it. I am too lazy to switch jobs.

Last job Kelly found was through a friend on linkedin. There ya go! It works. Not for lazy 64 year old guys, but for some people.

From what my professional friends tell me, the job-search internet food chain goes something like: Craigslist-------------Facebook------------------------------------------------------------------------------Linkedin The number of dashes represents the increased likelihood of finding an actual job through the site.

The only time I've ever used my Linkedin account is to find contactinformation for people I really don't know but need to contact.
Since it is more of a professional site not a social site most folks include a resume and their contact information. That's how I found Jessica Cherok, Don Boone's daughter. Without Linkedin I would have had no way of tracking her down.

I've been invited to join peoples' Linkedin things. First thing it asked for was my email, which I typed in. Then it asked for my password. What password? My email password? Forget that.

It think it depends on your occupation. Some seem better represented on Linkedin. I have no use for it. My wife uses it almost daily.

Thanks for the info/reports. I don't have any use for it so I think I'll just pass and try to find his email another way.
