No, he's not. But then again, Reacher is probably the least believable/credible hero of the entire genre, so who plays him probably doesn't matter a wit.

I don't think I'll be seeing the movie. At least not until after I finish all the Reacher books.
Hugh Jackman would have been a good choice.

I'm having a VI moment. I've not heard of Jack Reacher.

My daughter talked me into reading 61 Hours, which I think was his 14th book. Then I went back and started at the beginning. As I was reading the third book I was finding it hard to stick with the story; he was just a little too superhuman to be doing what he was doing without tights and a cape. I don't know if Lee Child was starting to lose the formula (and obviously found it again by book #14), or if I was just getting my fill of Jack Reacher. Not that I'm giving up or anything. I think I just need longer breaks in between Reacher novels.

Tom has been here before. This is nothing compared to the outcry over his casting in the Vampire Lestat film. Ann Rice issued a retraction of her objections after screening the film; Cruise was that good in it. Odd guy, great chops.

I'm thinking the new Bond guy would have made a great Jack reacher.

Of course, there was once upon a time a website called "Craig not Bond"; right up until the movie came out and he proved to be fantastic in the role...

Reacher is supposed to be like 6'5" with huge hands. How does Cruise fit that?

So, so far we've figured out that Cruise ≠ Reacher ≠ Bond ≠ Craig.
But we DO know that of the four, Craig is the only one without another meaning.

Or, just like all the other movies, they'll simply hire from the incredible pool of tiny people to support him in the role. That article wasn't kidding: if you've ever spent time in Hollywood, or visited the industry, then you know... those people are all tiny. Little type-A elves with iron wills and nerves of steel, the whole town.

"At 6 feet 5 inches and 250 pounds, he all but demanded the sort of larger-than-life movie actor not seen since John Wayne."
Get Mickey Rourke or Christian Bale or Liam Neeson or screw expectations and get Samuel L Jackson

I've read several of the Reacher novels and never thought once of Tom Cruise. But, despite some personal weirdness (don't all of us have a little?), he has done some good acting. "A Few Good Men" is one of my favorite movies.
I would have preferred someone a little bigger and a little blonder. I think Matt Damon would have been a better choice, maybe Val Kilmer.
Child's books are very entertaining. They take a lot of liberties with reality but I expect and except that in fiction. "One Shot" is set in an Indiana city located where there is none. And Child can't shake some decidely British English usages that I think his editors should catch. (Just one example, rather than "next to last" he frequently says "last but one." Always causes pause while I mentally translate.) Overall I enjoy the books a lot. Like Jim, I don't want to read two in a row, though.
I rarely go to movies, but I look forward to catching this on DVD down the road.

Get Mickey Rourke or Christian Bale or Liam Neeson or screw expectations and get Samuel L Jackson Neeson almost qualifies (6' 4"). Bale is 6 even. Rourke, believe it or not, is 5' 11". Hell, I'm only 1/4" shorter than that; hardly the stuff of giants. Arnold? 6' 2". Robert Downey is becoming a genuine action star, and he's eyeball-to-eyeball with the scientologist at 5' 8". Statham? Van Damme? These undisputed tough-guy brick shithouses can eat my goatee at a whopping 5' 9" apiece. Pixies with iron wills, the whole lot of 'em, I'm telling you. That Rock/Dwayne wrestling guy could do it. He actually hits 6' 5".

Neeson is my choice, good actor, Irish, and actually tall. Looks younger than his years as well.
Arnold is about 5'10". I stood next to him briefly about 12 years ago when he was filming something in the Marina District here in SF. He could be even shorter now.

Yah, in fillums you're whatever height you need to be--generally a lot taller. Think Alan Ladd.
As for Cruise, he's actually a very decent actor--we've been watching him since he danced in his skivvies way back when. Even in a carnival thrill-ride like the new Mission Extremely Unbelievable he brings whatever the scene needs. I have more fun watching young Mr. Downey (as in the new Sherlock, last night), but then young Mr. D. doesn't just chew up the scenery, he devours whole sound stages and spits out splinters.
