First, it is this weekend that is already full but I'm thinking "this is Johnny" I could bend some noses out of joint and make this happen. (the wife is coming in from Las Vegas that afternoon...but hey...it's Johnny) Anyway, I find him on the Friday Night Coca Cola stage. What?? from 7:30 to 8:45? What the H.. E.. double damn hockey sticks it this?? And then... oh I can't stand it!!! Eddy friggin Money! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! I would have to piss off faithful wife to hear Johnny for one measly hour then run like hell so as not to hear that no talent POS!!! Why does this chap me so bad? But I hate it! What is the world coming to? Johnny opening up for ...for....oh, I can't stand it!!!

Don't look at is as Johnny opening for an ex accountant or whatever E.M. was. Johnny has the best time slot based on attendance. The place will be packed at 8 p.m. By 10 when "Sh Sh Sh Shakin' hits the PA most folks will be heading for the parking lot to get home before bedtime.
Do yourself a favor. Go back on Sat. for Edgar's set and show up on Sunday too for Sonny Landreth. A weekend full of great music.

Mark, you add such a sense of calm sometimes. You really are able to put things in perspective.

Johnny Winter was due to play at the last Bishopstock blues festival, here in Exeter a few years ago. This man was a huge influence on my playing and the opportunity to see and hear him, two miles from my home, was intoxicating. Sadly he became ill and was unable to perform. I had to listen to two hours of Gary Moore pretending to be a bluesman instead. JW isn't going to be around much longer-get to see him while you can or live to regret it.

Johnny Winter is one of my alltime favs and remains one of the most underrated to ever pick up a guitar.

Was a little over the top. Oh well. Usually I blast something out, read it, shudder at the ignorance, mendacity, or plain foolishness of it and then delete it. The safety was not on and the post fired off prematurely.

I am really glad to see this hasn't turned into a bash Johnny thread. So many times when Johnny Winters' name is mentioned his failing health and poor performance issues cloud the fact that JDW is one of the most talented gutarists in America. I'm really tired of reading the "I'll never go see Johnny again..." threads.
Rock on Johnny.

One of the more interesting things about catching Johnny is the rough tatoo & leather crowd he draws. I got jammed in the midst of a sea of beer guts when catching him at a stage of the Jazz Fest. It was literally too tight to move. The air was redolent of tobacco breath, whiskey & pot and I was feeling a mite claustrophobic and a bit green about the gills. There's some urgent jostling in front of me and, akin to the parting of the red sea, a space opens up in front of me. Alas, a Winter fan was relieving himself on the backs of the legs of the hapless fans standing in front of him.
Classic.

I was lucky enough to catch Johnny at the City Stages festival in B'ham back around '94. He was great when I saw him. Probably couldn't tell you the name of a single song he played, but I still remember how easy he made it look to do everything he does.
Man, City Stages was one of those festivals that used to always give me a reason to go. Over the course of about 6 years I saw Leo Kottke, Johnny Winter, Richard Thompson (solo acoustic), Buddy Guy, Stanley Jordan, Michael Hedges, Junior Brown, and quite a few other great guitarists. Now the festival panders to the Country Crowd for the most part, though this year they did have Tommy Emmanuel there. (I skipped it, since a half-length performance by Mr. E wasn't quite worth the drive, time, and money having already seen him in a much better, quieter, setting a year ago).

Hmmmm I was just wondering if it would be worth risking a spousal "tongue lashing" and/or a tour of duty on the proverbial couch to see Johnny Winter. (no such restrictions for me these days) Went throught that about 30 years ago when I slipped over to 'The Village' one night to see The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (with surprise guest, Linda Ronstadt). Since Linda Ronstadt was among the spouses favorites, she really blew a fuse when she learned of her appearance. Well she was given the opportunity to go. Not my fault she missed it but I guess I was a bad boy nonetheless.
