It was easier to do my taxes when I had income.
All we have for taxes is SS and it takes going through miles of pages to know you owe nothing and you are getting nothing back.
We have moved into the 49% who pay no income taxes.

Isn't there a short form for that? 1040-EZ has no place for SS so you have to use the regular 1040. That's the pain.

The last two years, I have made an appointment and had AARP do my taxes. Is that an option where you live? Took about 20 minutes to file electronically fed and state.
Oh, and it was free [call me a moocher ].

I may try the senior center next year. I went through it this year. As Bruce said "pages and pages of "No", "Continue"......." and half of those are ads for the upgrades to Deluxe.

Don't know about Arizona, but my mother in Montana gets a credit from the state even though she paid no taxes Lives on Social Security only and gets money from the state every year. Another mooch. I'm glad we have enough of an income in our retirement to be taxpayers.

Our CPA told us that our 2010 return was the single longest he's ever prepared in his career. Damn thing cost a few trees, I'm sure. This years' is only a touch shorter.

If you are annoyed with the Turbotax interview format it is really simple to turn it off and go straight to the few numbers you have to fill in if that is your situation.

Remind me to ask you next year how to do that. Does it matter if I was using an on-line version through my bank rather than having the actual TurboTax package?

You can go straight to the sections you need with either the online or installed versions

Farm taxes are a pain, ask epaul. But for our separate personal income no-farm-involved stuff, we go to a lady who has done our taxes for years. 35 bucks, and it's all done. She does a good job, knows more than the canned programs, so we can't go wrong.
But back to the farm thing combined with a farm inheritance, Good Lord.

I'd guess mine from last year at around 40 pages or so. That includes two S corps and our personal return. I put a lot a faith in our accountant. I dont have the patience to dig through and understand all that.

After 65, just don't mess with it. Don't even file. Unless of course your rich. They prefer it that way.

What is the cut off now for filing? I can remember when it was $3000 went two years with out filing. Then I seem to remember it was $10k.

If you're married, filing joint and both 65 or over (not saying you are), it's $21,300. Social Security generally doesn't count if it's your only income. www.efile.com/tax/do-i-need-to-file-a-tax-return/I've never done taxes for other people, but was an auditor in a former life. I'm not allowed to pay someone to do our taxes. Mr. H makes comments about having bought me books and having sent me to school to get a B.S. in accounting. Our taxes were pretty simple this time around - no capital gains, no business income, equal quarterly estimated payments. Some years it was a nightmare.
