A $.05/day potential cancer drug, and “When they realized the {clinical trial} results wouldn’t be available until they lost their patent, they pulled out.” If not gov't $$, maybe the Gates foundation?

“When they realized the results wouldn’t be available until they lost their patent, they pulled out,” said Goodwin, whose $25 million study is supported by the Canadian and U.S. governments as well as not-for-profit groups including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Cancer Research UK. There's already a lot of clinical trials going on with this drug. Since it is already on the market for another indication (diabetes), there is no need to set up new manufacturing, etc. There are actually a lot of programs under way to "repurpose" drugs now that there is a plethora of genetic and metabolic information about cancer cells, as well as about the metabolic pathways affected by the drugs.
