There's already a lot of clinical trials going on with this drug. Since it is already on the market for another indication (diabetes), there is no need to set up new manufacturing, etc.

There are actually a lot of programs under way to "repurpose" drugs now that there is a plethora of genetic and metabolic information about cancer cells, as well as about the metabolic pathways affected by the drugs.
