Somehow in my browsing I came across the idea of "diversion safes", but google that, and you'll get a zillion "books" or hollowed-out cans, etc., that you can stuff things in.
Are these things so well-known and common that the jig is up? That--since they're so well-known--they don't do what they were originally intended to do?
I've tried googling "disadvantages of diversion safes" but don't get much.
Obviously, in a disaster, cash could get burned up.
Anything else?

Only the thief that studies the types that are available would know what to look for. There is everything from a peanut butter jar to a ratty old tennis shoe. Other than fire I don't see any real disadvantages. Many of the types will also work as a handgun stash but that has many pros and cons. www.diversion-safes.com/images/T/xctmpfJ8bWD.png [/img] OK, now this one is a bit over the top.

I have a cousin who keeps a key to her home in a hollow "rock" with a swivel-hinged base. It looks very much like any rock. She keeps the rock in her mail box.

Doesn't everyone keep a solitary rock in their mail box?

If you have a basement that looks like mine, you can hide anything down there and no one would find it.
Often, not even me, and I'm the one who put it there.

Whatever you do, don't stuff 20's into the bra or panties of a dancer at a club. If you do, you'll never see that money again.

I need a competent thief to help me find all the stuff where I knew I could find it again and now I can't remember where that is.
I can think of a diversion un-safe for that fake can of WD-40. I would hide something valuable there, if I owned anything that was valuable, forget I had done that and then throw the can out when I tried to use it and couldn't make it work.
I think my underwear would be my best bet. No one every goes in there but me.
