you don't think cultures are racially based? really? There ought to be a Venn diagram for this. Given the age of the U.S., I think it's fairly safe to say that, with the exception of the folks who were already here when we overran this huge chunk of land, our population consists of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants. Native American, European, African, Asian, Mexican, South American, etc. (I'm not really making a list, just siting examples) - break them all down... Scandinavian, English, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, etc. Cultural diversity in the U/S. IS racial, ethnic, geographic (both original country and landed location), age, religious affiliation... a grand, wonderful, sometimes hopelessly divisive blend of inherited and invented lifestyles.

Nobody accused you of being a racist. I can't help what you choose to read into things, Jeff.

If you don't see insurmountable cultural differences (what's important in the local culture) between N ID, Vinton, NYC, SF, LA, Tonapah NV etc you need to get some glasses.

"Insurmountable?" What's a guy who sees insurmountable differences between the states doing with a motor home?

Sadly, this thread started because of the secession thread I started. My only intent was to pass along some humor regarding a (at the time) tiny little portion of the population who were miffed at the election outcome. Apparently a few hornet's nests did get kicked, and I am sincerely sorry. In the future, I'll do my best to neither hold the "football" or kick it.

Ok, this is a watershed moment, but I'm with Jeff. Cultural is cultural. He said nothing about race, didn't imply it and has said nothing here in the time I've been around to indicate he has the attitude to have meant it.
I disagree, however, that we are too culturally diverse, from state to state to operate well as a unit. If our cultural diversity was a weakness call for dissolution instead of a strength to build a truly great nation upon, we would have fractured neighborhood by neighborhood hundreds of years ago. To this day here in North Carolina, we have very different cultures in urban centers vs small towns and rural areas. A look at the red, blue and purple of recently-published election maps will tell you we are not at all unique.
How do you divide that up culturally?
Tim

I'm just tired of hearing people say this country is just too dang "different" for its own good. Different from what? Conservative Christian white folks? They seem to be the ones making that claim the most. Tough. How would we solve a problem like that? Make everyone more the same? Get rid of those that aren't the same. Agree that some single "culture" is better than others? Gee, I wonder which one that would be. A few months back Jeff posted an article that talked about how much better the would was when it was mostly a colony under European control. Yeah those were the days. Freedom and liberty, not so much. But I bet the trains ran on time

John, you can read race into that if you want, since in the general sense that's a part of it, but it's more about a lack of tolerance for people with different beliefs, backgrounds, lanuguages, looks, etc.

This might be the most outrageously offensive reply in the history of the soundhole. Two of my friends -- one treating the other like something to be scraped off the bottom of a shoe. There just isn't any other way to interpret it. I think its perfectly reasonable to conclude that the US is too large geographically, too diverse culturally, and simply too big to sustain a consensus central government. There's nothing improper about having that discussion. "too diverse culturally" yeah, if only we could get rid of all the darkies....

John, your culture wasn't being told to either go away or be abandoned.

Ironically the White House is posting the various petitions, promising to respond to any that get more than 25,000 signatures. They consider the petitions to be perfectly legitimate symbolic protests that should be given due consideration and answered with that degree of dignity.
So far I think there are 14 filed including Austin's petition to seceed from Texas, and 7 of them have met the threshold and will recieve a response.
Kudos to President Obama for handling this like an adult.
Unlike the raging racist gotcha snarkfest his folowers have lowered themselves to.

Just another culture too many. Was it harsh, yeah. But when the topic drifts to the superiority of one culture over another (the topic of that article Jeff posted a few months back), enough is enough.
