I still say we toss Congress off the cliff. Or, at the very least, revoke the pensions for all current and past Congressional "public servants". Last I check, 'service' meant some sort of personal sacrifice for the good of the Nation. But, Sin-ators and Reprehensitives only have to serve five years to get the full pension that ranges from $41-55,000. There are 154 living ex-Senators and 884 ex-Reps. If they all lived for an avg of 20 years post Congress at the lowest pension level that would amount to about a billion dollars. Not a huge chunk of the debt, but still a big number. Also factor in the salary of seated members ~175,000 a year times 535 = 93 million a year. Also, the best health insurance possible. Yeah, what sacrifice? Scumbags.

Angels have gathered around the corpse...
Pore Godot is daid Pore Godot is daid. He's lookin' oh so peaceful and serene! (Chorus) AND SERENE!!!!!
He's all laid out to rest With his hands across his chest His fingernails have never been so clean... (Chorus) OH SO CLEAN!!!!
The daisies in the dell Will give off a different smell.. Because Godot is is underneath the ground... (Chorus) LIFE WAS HELL...!
He's lookin' oh so purty and so nice He looks like he's asleep It's a shame that he won't keep But frankly we're simply out of ice and cash...! (Chorus) OUT OF CASH!!!!

They have to have served for five years and be 62 years old.
Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at age 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. They are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service. The amount of the pension depends on years of service and the average of the highest three years of salary. By law, the starting amount of a member’s retirement annuity may not exceed 80 percent of his or her final salary.

ST, I saw those figures too, on Wikipedia. Regardless of the exact amount, it is a huge sum and I personally think it's excessive.
Usually when one thinks of 'service' they assume there was some sacrifice or lean periods as a result of said duty. Some Congress-people are among the richest around. I just think it smacks of hypocracy when they're asking regular Americans to give more.

Just a message from your local working stiff. You need to watch more MSNBC, then you'd know everything's OK and you shouldn't believe what you see around you.
