I recently bought a very nice Eastman mandolin -- oval- hole archtop, spruce and maple -- after my beloved 1953 Martin mandolin imploded a couple of months ago. The Eastman came with a Schertler pickup internally mounted, which is a nice feature, as much of the mandolin playing I do is live with a band, and many of the after-market mandolin pickups leave something to be desired. I can run direct to the board, but I was thinking about picking up a preamp for a little more tone-shaping, and was considering Schertler, both because it is designed to match their pickups, and because the line out from the mandolin is an XLR line, and most acoustic pickup preamps use 1/4" plugs (I could use adaptors, but ideally not).
Just wanted to see if any of you folks have experience with these pickups, the Schertler preamps, or any alternatives you think I should look at. Thanks for any and all feedback.
