With any number of discs, I think my Ella Fitzgerald collection is pretty complete, so I'm moving on to Sarah Vaughn. Can anyone give disc names, cuts, etc., for any "must haves" for her? (or things to avoid that might be rated well, but aren't really so good) Yes, I can google that, but I am hoping for some personal/direct input here. ~=~=~ I do have one SV cut, on a disc with Joe Pass, that is truly amazing. I think this is it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCKOnsVw-wMNeedless to say, I'd like more of that. Much more of that.

I recently checked out from the library a Sarah Vaughan (note the spelling for future searches) with the unlikely title "16 Most Requested Songs". Unlike the Autumn Leaves in your link these selections tend toward the sultry torch songs, slow, emotive, tender bits and the like. I think that was her forte. It's a splendid collection.

The album that track is from, "How Long Has This Been Going On" is one of my favorites. Also Sarah Vaughn in Hi-Fi. One of my favorites, though a little unusual in her discography, is called Brazilian Romance, in which she does the music of Milton Nascimento. She has a bossa nova album also called I Love Brazil that I don't really remember whether it was any good or not.

Generally true, except for the Pablo's mentioned. Especially the Joe Pass/Ray Brown one. There was a period from the mid 60's until the mid 70's when record companies tried to get her to do pop music and it just didn't work.
Thanks for the "Tenderly" I had forgotten.

Nice scatting, but what about the gorgeous melody? As Chet said; 'It all starts with the melody.'

I watch that video often Doc. What I often wonder is if she had been diagnosed (bone, not the melanoma) when she sang it. It certainly sounds like she truly felt those words. She does a great version of "People Get Ready" from the same gig and it has that same raw, emotional bite.

Sorry for the backtrack but what are a couple of your favorite Ella discs? I have five of EF and Joe Pass, the best of those (by far) is "Fitzgerald & Pass ... Again". After that one, then maybe "Speak Love" or maybe "Sophisticated Lady". Another great one is "Lullabies of Birdland" (which came on a 2-for-1 along with "Sweet and Hot"). Also a 2-fer is "Ella & Louis" which is a combination of their stuff by almost the same names. And you get Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and Ray Brown behind them. One disc is 75 min and the other 68 so good value all round. Also, one moreā¦ Back in the 90s on a trip thru chicago I spent some time in a used music shop in Oak Park. Among many other things, I happened to pick up this collection. This was my first Ella, and believe it or not, it probably sat on my shelf for a year or two before I started playing it. I don't like everything on it, but the playlist I have for this is 76 songs/3.8 hrs. There are some truly wonderful duets on one of the discs. e.g., www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuCO7Kq744U ******* And of course, thanks for the Sara Vaughan ideas!

Thanks! I have the songbook series but I find it generally uninteresting. I knew I liked Ella more than that ... thanks for the tips.
