I'm sure somebody has posted something about Martin Simpson here before, but I just heard something by him on the CBC last night and I'd thought I'd share something I found on youtube doing a Randy Newman song:

Simpson is one of the most interesting players in the acoustic world--great chops, a great ear for tone and articulation, wide-ranging taste. He's also a first-rate teacher. And funny. Years ago, when Celtic guitar was all the rage, he was doing a workshop on arranging that material and somebody asked about "Sheegeg Sheemore," saying that everybody played it. Martin's reply: "That's why I don't."

Mark, is that Gaelic or displaced-fingers-on-keyboard syndrome?

I was "Irish" according to Google. They don't list Gaelic as a language.

I don't remember him playing around New Orleans.
I appreciate he takes the time and has the ear to actually play in tune. Thank you, Martin.

Many years ago I got to see him play in the tiny basement stage at Front Porch in Valpo.

I've never heard of him either, but then again I've never heard of anybody. I do like what I heard, though. Lots.

I'm a longtime fan of Mr. Simpson, and one of the tracks on "speechless," called "The Week Before Easter," is totally based on Martin's arrangement. I did simplify it a bit, as I thought his many embellishments took away from the incredible beauty of the piece's melody.
Here is Martin doing that tune, coupled with another.

June Tabor's collaboration with Martin was fruitful.
Here's some June without Martin.

He fires off a couple of licks in his warm up/patter that just take my breath away. He has that thing where he can play something that is not only stupidly complicated but beautiful. Fantastic tune.

I've had his arrangement to Rose of Allendale in my repertoire for years. A really great arrangement. I still love to play it.
