Actually... that's what they do to Equity actors who want to appear in non-professional productions. They're hired under a sneaky kind of "teaching by example" clause, paid a stipend, the union is happy, and then the check gets torn up.
If I get hired by an Equity company and so much as flush a toilet, I'll have to join with a stiff initiation fee, and then slam! I'll be retired for good.
You have to face the music here folks, most artists have bull eyes on their backs which say, Screw me! I'm an Artist!

Out here in the sticks "Art" is a charity. 2 years ago, I played one of their shows, free as did all the other acts. Last year they had to cancel that show for lack of funds. Agreeing to play is just an act of charity and everyone, the musicians anyway, understand that. What money they do raise they use to bring in an orchestra once a year, put on a few plays, rent their building and provide some art and music classes at low rates. I don't know if playing for them would get you any credit toward "Community service" from the judge but it might. This ain't Minneapolis you know.

That is all well and good, but they should be honest about it and ask for musicians to donate their time, not go through this passive-aggressive nonsense of paying you with the expectation that you will return the money.

Apparently it's a tradition. The letter just said they would welcome a donation after saying they would give me $40. You... "will receive $40 in compensation, with the option to donate a portion back to ESO".

Pretty sore today. Did over ten minutes of chest compressions during a code yesterday morning. It is quite exhausting but the adrenalin makes it all a rubbery blur at the time. Now my shoulders, neck, triceps and low back feel like I was in a minor car wreck. (You actually do most of the work with the back muscles.)
Anyway, it'll pass and I can't complain.
Later gonna move some boxes to storage and touch up some paint around the house (I don't work today).

Ten minutes of chest compression doesn't usually yield a favorable result, I'm thinking. Yikes.

Ten minutes of chest compression doesn't usually yield a favorable result, I'm thinking. Yikes. Ten minutes was just my contribution. Code went for 30. Six shocks, several rounds of meds. Five different people switching out for compressions, I did four minutes and then another six later in the code. You are correct, the pt did not survive.

Well, I'm almost back from Cuba. One of these hours my ear will unblock and I'll be able to hear again! Looking forward to that. I had a cold when we left and still have it. b o r i n g
Last night the city sent a huge tractor with a blade to back the snow off the road and on to my front lawn, and they sent a guy with a snowblower to blow out the mouth of the drive as well. I have never seen either. The driveway is a canyon with 8 foot walls. Rachel keeps paths dug out through the garden for Morgan to run around in - they are about four feet deep now. I don't believe I have ever seem this much snow in my life with the exception of the winter of 76-77 when we were snowbound for 5 days and the snow came up to the tops of the hydro poles. That year the drifts in the country north of here were 25 feet deep. They carved out canyons for the roads.
I woke this morning dreaming of blue green water and birds, sun and white table cloths, charming waiters and fresh juice, shining silver and flowers on the tropical vegetation. Cuba was a delight. We hope to go back next year.
Lots of photos waiting to be dealt with. Need to get out in this and restock the pantry. I think more snow is on the way. bleh.
Have lovely days everyone, and be safe if you are in the storm zone.

Bruce wrote: If someone actually tells you this, it's a new low in musician treatment. "We'll feed you, but we would appreciate it if you would barf into the compost bin afterward." I can beat that. Here's a contract I saw yesterday for a venue I will NOT be playing: Performance Contract
Performance Date(s):
Performance Hours __7pm to ______pm
Complementary beverage of your choice for each member of the band at beginning, end and every break, up to 4 beverages per person.
Pay is based on 5% the amount of sales 1 hours before you start, and to the end of the performance. This will be paid in the form of a gift card. This gift card can be transferred to anyone you would like, and we would appreciate it if we could continue to add to the gift card verses multiple gift cards. We will calculate the dollar amount and credit your account within a week. If you need to have a gift card, please let us know and we will send it out, or you can pick it up at the next gigue.
Set up for your group will be in the FRONT of the store. This is the corner of Xxxxx and Xxxxxxxxx. There might be a need for help in moving the furniture, so please plan accordingly. There is one electrical outlet available and another across the short side of the room. Please bring a heavy duty extension cord of 10 feet if you are in need of another outlet.
Sale of CD’s and Merchandise is encouraged and you are welcome to put out a tip jar.
IF you have any questions please call me at the below number before the date of your gigue. Thank you so much for your interest in playing at Xxxxx Coffee. ______________________________ ________ ____________________________ XXXX, owner Date XXXX, owner xxxx@msn.com 651-224-XXXX Xxxxx Coffee[/div][/font] Perhaps they thought by spelling it "gigue," they were adding a bit of class that seems to be otherwise wholly missing.
