While all bridges are liable to come off at some point due to conditions of heat or humidity I think more footprint behind the bridge pins is less likely to come loose. Some of the belly forward Gibson bridges had very little footprint behind the pins and while they may not come completely off they are usually loose along the back center area. And even if the glue gives up the bolts will hold. Now you know why the bolts are there in the first place.

For years I had a Tele bridge cover sitting on my amp for a ashtray, no Tele, just the cover. Stratocasters came with bridge covers too but people jus pulled them off and tossed them in the case to be forgotten.

As for the Martin bridge I choose to call them functional. The Gibson bridge is so ugly it seems to me to be in good taste. I can't explain.

My friend Todd Cambio makes some pretty cool guitars based off some old Italian designs. He also makes some killer Stella-style guitars. www.fraulini.com

Eli West has a guitar with that antique-looking bridge. I thought the maker was Howe, but I guess not. I can't remember. I thought it started with "H"

Covering a road bridge does indeed save the planks and keeps the horses from getting scared. But also because of the ice, as Marty said. Since bridges are off the ground, they ice up much easier than a road does.
As far as guitar bridges, I don't know. I don't even know what mine looks like.

I've got a Brazilian/Adi dred coming back from finish soon. I have not made the bridge yet. Dreds can sometimes use some damping to control things so the few I've built have gotten ebony but other than that I've become a huge Brazilian bridge fan. I can't decide whether to try a BZ bridge on this one or not. Any suggestions?

Covering a road bridge does indeed save the planks and keeps the horses from getting scared. But also because of the ice, as Marty said. Since bridges are off the ground, they ice up much easier than a road does. . . . , If you'll glance again at William's favorite bridge, you'll see that only about 1/3 of the full span is covered. So the rest of it is going to ice up just nicely. (OK boys. Here's the truth about the bridge. The longest span is too long for simple timber members. So they build a truss along the sides out of smaller members bolted together. And as long as they've already built the frame of walls, it's a relatively simple thing to put siding and a roof on it.)

Simple and functional. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz zzzzz zz zz zz( ) [PS - I will say there is a nicety to the pyramid bridge. It gives the impression that it is there for a functionality; that it will improve the response. It's an acceptable aesthetic. It gives some detail (and purpose?) to an otherwise simple block of wood. It is a rectangular element in a curvilinear environment. But it anchors and terminates the very linear element of the strings, so the abruptness is not totally out of character.]

I've always thought these were interesting. But the concept never lived up to it's hype. I saw a Kiso Klein in a store once and it was rather nothing special.

Yes Terry and Don; the pyramid bridge has a form of elegance to it that is quite fine. The pyramid bridge makes it easier to get from one pyramid to another and that way you don't have to use the pyramid tunnel. It is so dark down there.
