Covering a road bridge does indeed save the planks and keeps the horses from getting scared. But also because of the ice, as Marty said. Since bridges are off the ground, they ice up much easier than a road does. . . . , If you'll glance again at William's favorite bridge, you'll see that only about 1/3 of the full span is covered. So the rest of it is going to ice up just nicely. (OK boys. Here's the truth about the bridge. The longest span is too long for simple timber members. So they build a truss along the sides out of smaller members bolted together. And as long as they've already built the frame of walls, it's a relatively simple thing to put siding and a roof on it.) And here's a totally unrelated story about the beauty and elegance of a structure: Years ago and architect friend took a job with the facilities department of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), where Mies Van Der Rohe made his US name. He taught there and designed many of the campus buildings. The crowning glory is: Crown hall. He told me the Architectural teaching staff held the building in holy reverence and marveled at the wonderful proportions of the exposed steel structure building. To which he laughed and told them; "Look at the Chicago building code. It says you have to fireproof a steel roof structure of an assembly building unless it's at least 20 feet above the floor. The underside of the steel structure ceiling is exactly 20 feet clear above the floor. So that's where Mies got his magical proportions; the fire code."

I've got a Brazilian/Adi dred coming back from finish soon. I have not made the bridge yet. Dreds can sometimes use some damping to control things so the few I've built have gotten ebony but other than that I've become a huge Brazilian bridge fan. I can't decide whether to try a BZ bridge on this one or not. Any suggestions? Go Brazilian for the bridge, don't put a pickguard on it, tell people they can't flatpick on the thing, and then when nobody is interested in it, give it to me!

I'm surprised nobody thought of the Rick Turner renaissance guitar That's not a bridge -- that's a minaret! I think this has class and dignity (although I admit to some bias):

I'm surprised nobody thought of the Rick Turner renaissance guitar It's not so much the shape (though it's strange in it's own right) but the proportions of the thing in relation to the guitar that makes it grotesque.

I think this has class and dignity (although I admit to some bias): It's nice enough. I'd give it a solid B+ in it's own right. But considering the old bridge was an A+, I never understood why the change.

Does anybody know when Goodall started using the new bridge, maybe it was to distinguish between guitars made in Hawaii and guitars made in California.
The Turner bridge is a nightmare waiting to happen. Except, notice the two pearl dots. Bridge is bolted or screwed.
The Fralini bridge is quaint but very susceptible to coming loose and cracking. Bridges of that type were used on early guitars. But in those days guitars never really traveled very far from the climate in which they were made.

No. He made the change when the guy in his Hawaii shop who made the winged bridge died or retired or something. Around 2000. That was also the time he made a number of small but significant changes to his guitar process. Changed from nitro to polysomething finishes. Messed with the bracing. So, he decided to never go back. He was asked by a number of people (myself included) if he'd make a guitar with the old bridge and he steadfastly said no.

Lame, lame, lame. All ebony. Why? I'll blame it on Martin and players insisting on that look.
