Melva's been driving a lot for her job lately and depending on the GPS navigator on her phone, which bumps up the cell phone bill. It's time we got a GPS in the car.
Recommendations? Any we should avoid?

Google maps on my phone never fails me. And I've never exceeded the data limits on our phone plan.

I use Verizon, but not their VZ Navigator. I never see any added data charges for using Waze or Pandora for that matter. I never even come close to using my data allowance.

I have a Garmin. It came with lifetime updates which you do through the computer once or twice a year. It also has a road alert feature that lets us know if there are reported accidents or delays on the route. That has saved us from being caught in traffic for long periods several times. The model is nuvi 1350 LMT. There is probably a newer version of it available now. Of course, you can always buy a new car and get a factory installed dashboard system.

We haven't gotten one for the car before because we've used the phone. But now with a lot of new driving to new and different locations all over the city, we're using up the data allowance. Time for one in car.

I have a Garmin, don't recall which model. Radio Shack, under $200, it gets the job done. I'd recommend it over TomTom, had one of those.

When I want a unit I can hang in the car window for directions, I use the Garmin Nuvi. Don't know the model number, but the one feature it HAD to have was the ability to plan routes in the house without satellite connections. The cheaper ones are great for planning routes only if they start from your current location. Which it can only do if it has a satellite link. The better ones let you pick your start, end, waypoints, etc and save them. Then when you have a satellite link you can call up the route and run it. When I travel, I have all my routes planned before I even leave the house. Airport Hertz lot to hotel, hotel to hertz lot, etc.

We have a Magellan, but when it needs replacing (which might be soon, since they stopped issuing map updates for ours), we'll get a Garmin Nuvi. No matter what feature set you settle on, remember that the LMT suffix codes indicate Lifetime Maps and Traffic updates.

You might look into the Flagellan. It's helped amoebas navigate for billions of years.

Billy Bob says "drop it in a old sock and it makes a handy blackjack". Sock? what's that. That's like when somebody socks you on the jaw with a Garmin in a sock.

Whatever they have in a Mazda 3. My son's new car actually found my house and that's the first GPS I've seen that did that.

Real men don't use GPS. They just wander around aimlessly.

Some of those GPS ladies have voices that make you think they have possibilities.
