Interactive graphics from NYTs that shows state-by-state how many were born in that state and stayed and how many moved there from some other state, year by year since 1900. Where we came fromCalifornia used to be a high immigration state. Not any more. Now the south is the hot spot. Like Georgia.

Least transient state in the US of A is my Louisiana.
I didn't skew the numbers too much...born in NY, grew up in CA, lived in KS, NM, CO, NH, OH, IN, and...LA.

Interestingly enough, there was a blurb a couple weeks ago about a poll for happiest cities in America. I think Louisiana had the top 5 happiest cities. So, nobody leaves.

I was born in Maryland. Lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Germany, North Carolina, Hawaii, Washington, Korea, Iraq, England, Missouri, New York, and Afghanistan.

I could probably come close to matching a couple of you movers. But particularly in the formative school years (K-12) I think it's 8 different school systems. All the way from ridiculous (some almost criminally so) to the sublime. So a serious patchwork quilt of education. The last two and a half years of high school were particularly onerous.
