Breakfast at 218 this morning was like a dandelion gone to seed. We were all together but then some kid plucked our stem from the ground and with a puff of breath we all started drifting away, and for those who tried to thank me upon leaving I have to say this:
Nick and Charlota told us to use their venue for the concert. The Garrison Library ladies assured us they’d fill up the place. Karen and Aaron, the naturalists at the nature center, demanded we have Saturday there. The Art Guild gave that day a cool ambience. The good folks at the Hitchin’ Post kept the food and beer flowing, and the Cobblestone let you folks play into all hours of the night. Except for living around really nice people I didn’t do a damned thing.
You folks who came, however, did do a lot. Factory Chef allowed the festivities to begin on Thursday by providing a warm venue with great food, and giving a couple people a place to stay. He also provided us with a great meal after the concert on Saturday.
Dub and Marty are the ones who planned the whole thing. Between them, most of this event was covered. Marty did a marvelous job with the sound, Dub took several days of his time to be sure that his equipment that we used was perfected to the concert facility, and what was weird what that whenever I called either of them they’d actually answer the phone despite caller id. Their general response to any of my questions was “yes, Todd, we know, we’re taking care of it.”
We need to thank Lar for the lighting, David and Melva for making the show run smoothly, and David again for videoing the thing, and the editing he’s willing to do, and Tamarak for carrying around heavy objects.
The real reason, however, as to why this gathering was a success is because of everyone who attended. One person being gone would have blanded the flavor of everything. If one person hadn’t been there it would have been like omitting the nutmeg from an apple pie or garam masala from a curry or carrots from a stew. It just wouldn’t have been the same. Like potatoes with no gravy. We truly have a unique community going on here, one like no other, and the only lack of ingredient we had was those who couldn’t make it because of understandable reasons.
I get nervous every year when we have Ijam in Iowa, wonder why in the hell we are having it here, and get worked up about people traveling so far, and hoping everything works out. But it always does. And the reason it does is because you are a really nice group of folks. And if anyone wants to thank anyone, it is yourselves. Thank you all for making this weekend such a success.
