A Swannanoa friend is looking for a guitar teacher for his soldier son, preferably in Lower Manhattan. I first thought of Howard, but suggestions are welcome. The friend likes my way of playing, and I'm assuming his son does too. A stretch, I know. Thoughts?

Coachdoc, I can't recommend anyone in particular downtown specifically, but your friend might try to get in touch with www.nycguitarschool.com/ to find out more information. The school is in midtown, and they offer group and private lessons in all styes. When my son was taking lessons, he studied with Val MacKend, one of the best teachers in NYC for children and adults. That was awhile ago, and I understand she's still teaching. I would imagine her fees are a tad dear these days... but she is worth it. Not the kind of teacher who says, "What song do you want to learn today?" She has an entire program worked out, with tab, charts, CDs, looseleaf books. She is up on 110th Street, near the church of St. John the Divine. Jack Baker is a long-time figure in Greenwich Village, who has been teaching since the folk movement, and his website is www.frettedinstrumentsnyc.com/ . We just engaged a teacher for my little girl, who plays in a friend's trio, but we're here in Brooklyn and he is based in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He can teach all styles, and sometimes is flexible enough to come to your home, depending on location. That's about all I know right now.

Can't offer a single scintilla of advice on this one. But, once upon a time, I solidified my fingerpicking style at the "Guitar Study Center" in midtown Manhattan when it was owned by Paul Simon. It later got sucked up by the New School along with other cultural delights like Actors Studio.
