I'd love to watch split-screen replays to see exactly where the ball was when Gordon reached 3rd. Here's a real interesting article from USAToday.

Baumgarner was a joy to watch, no matter who you were routing for. What a game. Not quite. I admired it and appreciated it, but did not enjoy it. I was annoyed that he was so good and bummed that the third base coach didn't send him. Geeze, that was the only time all night the Giants were rattled, and boy were they rattled. I can't believe the coach didn't take advantage, I think there was so much panic there, (panic, not Panik), that they didn't have a chance of cleanly getting the ball to the catcher. The infielders dropped the throw in from the outfield even after the pressure was off. Edit: Excuse me. The throw in from the outfield bounced but was fielded cleanly. Still, SEND HIM!!! It's freakin' Baumgarner on the mound. He's un-flippin-touchable, for cryin' out loud. Edit 2: Aargh...

He was untouchable, on the other hand, he had just been touched, Gordon hammered the ball. It was reasonable to hold Gordon at third rather than send him on a near suicide attempt. Maybe Baumgarner was finally getting worn down. One of the Royals better hitters was waiting to find out.
As it turned out, yes, he should have been sent, but, at the time, holding him was probably as good a decision as any. Of all the words of mouth or pen, the saddest is it might have worked but, then again, it might not have, we will never know.
