A friend of mine, sometime music journalist Michael Oberman, posted this tonight on Facebook:
I feel like a real sucker. Watched "The Interview" tonight and it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I expected a little bit of satire...none. Ninety percent toilet humor that should be flushed down the drain. Screenwriters should destroy all of their writing utensils. Zippy the Pinhead could have written a better script. Sony should just have admitted it produced a piece of crap and shelved it. Instead, they have taken advantage of the hacking and the hackers' threats to pull off a coup for their company. The only saving grace was that four of us watched it together for a total of $5.99 on the Internet. Still $5.98 more than it was worth. If you saw the trailer for the movie in the theater and thought it looked funny...just watch the trailer again and realize every iota of humor in the movie was squeezed into that two minute trailer. Sigh...I feel like a real sucker.
As for Sony, between the release/no-release/sort-of-release drama, and all the embarrassment the leaked emails have caused, I doubt they will ever come to view this as a positive experience, no matter how much money they might make off it. A lot of peole are just ticked off at them because of suspicions they've orchestrated at least part of this mess. I don't give them that much credit.
Ditto, Christine Lavin:
I'm posting this as a public service. I just watched "The Interview" on youtube. Haven't disliked a film as much since "Inside Llewyn Davis." In that sorry film the cat had the sense to bail mid-film, but the puppy in "The Interview" has no such luck. Save your money. It's an equal-opportunity offender, insulting the intelligence of anyone stupid enough to pay to watch it. I set my $5.99 on fire, but don't you make the same mistake that I did. Merry Christmas.
