New Yamaha SR400. Total retro-bike. 400cc thumper, but the real story is it has a kick-starter! And NO starter motor. Wanna ride? Gotta kick it over. Saw this at the auto show the other night. Super cool. Tiny. Would make a perfect knock-around-town bike. Its not totally primitive: It has fuel injection, a counter-balance in the motor, and a compression release. Kind of spendy for what you get at $6k. Seems like a $4k bike to me. But what do I know.

It has the lines and scale of the old Honda CB series -- very appealing to my eye.

I"ve only bought one motorcycle, and one scooter. Honda CL 90 paid $75 and traded it for a VW engine. Vespa paid $5 and learned that you can pop the clutch and turn it over backwards. So anything over $100 for a motorcycle seems like a lot to me.

I think the extra 2 grand is the Old People Recapturing Their Youth surcharge.

Look for front drum brake and carburetor conversion kits in the aftermarket.

I wonder why one has to ride it with one leg stretched out behind?

I wonder why one has to ride it with one leg stretched out behind? That is the Nureyev model, John.

No I hadn't seen it. Yup, it's cute in a throw-back kind of way. That would have been a muscle bike in my HS days. Reminds me of the Honda 350 of the 450. The bench seat looks cool. They're not listing and performance data. It's probably a twin cylinder. Nothing is stated. Gets 66 mpg. That'd be nice. At 384 lb it's light. Nice for around town. Kind of light for the highway. My bike is 550 lb and that's kind of light for cross country travel. But more stable than the Yamaha I'd guess Yes, its a cool throw-back bike. Personally I have no romance with the kick starter. I'd be more apt to drool over the Indian Scout, or a Yamaha V-Max

If they wanted to build a vintage Yamaha how could they do it without a 2 stroke engine? Lik

My first bike was a Honda XL350 street/trail. Kickstart. I used to jump up, then come down with all my weight on the kickstarter. Worked nicely. Then one day at a gas station, as I came down, my foot slipped off the starter, and I started to fall to that side. Tried to shoot my leg out to catch myself, but my pant leg had got caught on the kick starter.
So I fell over. It was kind of embarrassing.
I like that. No, I would not go from disk to drum. Be good around town. But I paid 4k for my 1981 Suzuki GS1100. So, boy, that seems a lot for a dicky little two cylinder 400.
If I ever get a bike again, it's going to be some big fat cadillac of a thing, like a GoldWing, that I can cruise on, and is not built for me to do anything stupid. Because I know myself, yessirree.

Wow, I didn't know about the CB1100 -- that looks fabulous (I had a CB350 when I was in the Navy).
BTW the Yammy in the Original Post is a one-cylinder.

The sales guy at the auto show told me it had a counter-balance in the motor, but none of the specs talk about that. Its not possible that my sales guy lied is it? No chance. Probably just mis-informed.

The Yam has the same triangle section frame that HD adopted in the FXRS model I have: Stupidly, the HD crowd thought it looked "too Japanese" and they no longer use that design. Too bad. Its way better than their current stuff.
