It's a Kennedy OM, and it's in my living room where, after work tonight, I will A/B it against my Goodall to learn if they are sufficiently distinctive in voice to justify owning them both. This guitar was Glenn Elvig's, and so it's been well taken care of. To finance this deal I would either have to put my Podium OOO-S all-hog on consignment at Podium, or sell it to a Soundholer or somesuch.
Mizz Martina is very special -- rare, tons of mojo, comfy, gorgeous to look at and it has a lovely country sophisticate sound, but for some reason I have never really bonded with it entirely. On the other hand, I have been coveting a Kennedy for years, and this one is one of the builder's favorites.
So, we shall see. Anyone out there even potentially interested in the Martin, drop me a line. It's five years old, has really opened up and has goodies like retro Stew Mac tuners, bone nut and saddle, hide glue, rosewood bridge pins, K&K pickup. I have about two grand in it, would like to get $1,500.

Here is the Kennedy, back when it was first sold, to Glenn. www.guitarrodeo.com/guitars/kennedy/kennedy-om-rosewood.html As for the Martin, you sat across from it in Vinton at the park, remember? p.s. I have no way to do audio clips, sorry. I carry a dumbphone.

Bill, I looked at the website and see that it has sold. Do you know who bought it?

Bill, I looked at the website and see that it has sold. Do you know who bought it? No, as I said earlier (you musta missed it) that is the listing from when it was sold a couple years ago, to Glenn Elvig. Glenn now is selling it, via consignment, and I have first dibs because it is in my house right now.

Looking forward to hearing your comparison. Similar body styles, similar woods, distinctly different builders. I have only gotten my grubby mitts on Kennedy #35, a mahogany/spruce OM that is as smooth as fine whiskey (also spent some quality time with a parlor guitar that Terry brought to IdiotJam in 2012). Will be interesting to hear if a Kennedy rosewood OM has more of the piano-like sound of a Goodall or the smooth, mellow clarity that I have heard in Terry's other instruments.

Quite a few differences between the Goodall and Kennedy -- the Goodall has Honduran Rosewood, which I believe is more like a super mahog than really a rosewood relative, and it also has Euro Spruce, which sounds a lot different to me than sitka. Also, the Grand Concert is bigger and deeper than the OM shape. And this is one of Terry's two-sided guitars, so it has different construction, too.

What do you mean by "two sided" guitar?

Lovely guitar. But my spray-paint-trigger-finger gets itchy. I've loved the couple of Kennedys I've held and played. It would be a thrill to have one. But lately I've been looking for one of these.

What great fun, to have a Kennedy and a Goodall hanging around!
I had thought about trying to get a Kennedy OM as a 50th birthday present to myself, but with two graduations, another kid starting college, and a wedding this year, my birthday budget has gotten kicked to the curb.
Have fun, and keep us posted. I love to live vicariously.

What do you mean by "two sided" guitar? Terry or Marty can explain this better than I could. As I understand it, it's an inner laminated layer for the sides, maybe the back, as well.

Test 1: Playing a medley of Martin Simpson's "Week Before Easter" and Stephen Bennett's "Col de Lauteret," in fake Drop D, using a Shubb on the Goodall and a Planet Waves capo on the Kennedy. I have plaster walls, coved ceilings, the house is quiet and I am facing the picture window as I play, with good treble bounceback off the glass.
I can play passages at a time, quickly put one guitar on the couch beside me and pick up the other, mere seconds between hearing A and B. First thing I have to say is this -- freaking Goodalls are calliopes of sound, just insane how many frequencies they devour and spit out. At Podium yesterday, I was impressed with the richness and clarity of the Kennedy, but here today I feel as though the Kennedy went on a no-butter diet overnight, and it sounds a lot more elemental than the Goodall. Precise tone, I would say.
And that is not a bad thing by any means. One thing that attracted me to Mizz Martina the Hog was that it sounded especially good on the rootsier, blusier, countrier tunes, and it would be great if the Kennedy were able to do likewise.
So, on to "Muriel's Blues."

Test 2 -- On "Muriel's Blues," the crispness and clarity of the Kennedy shine, the same qualities that make reso guitars sound so good on Americana material. Physically, I am feeling like the Goodall has a wee bit more open string spacing and maybe a hair more scale length, but I could be wrong. I'm finding the Goodall a bit easier to play (with my diminished hands, especially the left), which I am guessing is a combo of neck contour and string tension. The Kennedy seems a little more tense (but not at all irritable). It also seems a little trickier to get in tune -- I wonder how old these strings are.
Speaking of which, anyone tried Martin Retro Monel strings? MartinFever was telling me about them yestiddy.
